Dual Sport Helmet Overview & Sizing Guide

Dual sport helmets, enduros or hybrids are the succession of the dirt helmet, originally invented by Arai with the XD-3. They are designed for riding at high speeds on highways but also perform well off-road. The trade-offs are a larger profile and noise level, but have the advantages of great air flow and can be worn with goggles.

There are three ranges of pricing, the lowest and best helmet for under $200 is the AFX FX-39 Dual Sport Helmet.  An aerodynamic poly carbonate shell design in an intermediate oval shape, the face shield was redesigned and flattened out for better vision. Goggles can be worn while still using the faceshield in its down position. The fully removable and washable liner and cheek pads are made of hypoallergenic and anti-microbial nylon. Retention system is quick release with sewn on ECE logo, Dot approved.

The AFX FX-39 Dual Sport Helmet Review:





Moving into the mid-range price range, the AGV AX-8 DS EVO helmet is lightweight with its composite shell: carbon fiber, Kevlar and fiberglass. With an evolved chin spoiler area that absorbs shock, there's a reduced risk of chest trauma. The chin vent area has a new shape with increased rubber. The visor is scratch proof and has anti-fog and distortion free properties. The helmet vents well, has a removable breath guard, washable cheekpads and lining. DOT and ECE 22.05 certified.

AGV AX-8 DS EVO Helmet Review:


In the mid-range price range, the Icon Variant Helmet is executed in a fiberglass, Dyneema and carbon fiber with a dual-density EPS core. A wind tunnel refined shape provides extensive venting and a removable and washable wicking liner. The anti-lift visor  has an extended eyeport and zero distortion optics. Peak is non removable and exceptionally aerodynamic. This helmet is ECE, DOT, SAI and SG certified.



The Icon Variant Helmet Review:





In the upper crust of dual sport helmets the Shoei Hornet DS offers premium features and functionality. It's composite outer shell is rigid, lightweight and resilient.  With a medium oval shape, the face shield is wide with a 3D curve that seals against eyeport beading. A shutter behind the nose cover directs air flow to clear shield fogging. A fully removable interior with 5-layer cheekpads that are channeled for eyeglasses. DOT and Snell approved.



The Shoei Hornet DS Review:




The high end Arai XD-4 helmet implements improvements over the XD-3 dual sport, already leading the pack in this category. Notable improvements are increased ventilation with redesigned face vents, a venturi vent at the brow and larger sculpted side cowl vents. The dry-Cool interior is fully removable with micro fitting 5mm peel away temple pads. A new shell shape creates better aerodynamics and stability at higher street speeds. Snell approved.

Scorpion EXO-R2000 Graphic Helmets for Fall '12

The Scorpion EXO-R2000 Ion Helmet (right) is new for Fall and now available for pre-order.This is their most technologically advanced helmet to date, developed in conjunction with Scorpion's sponsored riders in MotoGP. The shell is TCT composite, a proprietary 5 layer blend of fiberglass, Aramid and organic poly-resin fibers.This helmet is optimized for the 3/4 or tucked race position. The moisture wicking helmet liner and cheek pads are removable and washable and accomodate common styles of eyeglasses.Other features are the Everclear no-fog faceshield that is a state-of-the-art fog free and anti-scratch shield. Scorpion  EXO-R2000 Helmet Review:

The new features on the EXO-R2000 are the 4 shell shapes and materials plus a titanium double-d ring for weight savings.The Elip-Tec Ratchet System is also new allowing easy, secure, tool-less faceshield changes. An awesome venting system, there are six intake air ports at the front of the helmet while 10 vents exhaust hot air. Snell 2010 certified in three versions including the EXO-R2000 Circuit graphic (left). The helmet is also available in solids, Scorpion EXO-R2000 Helmet-Solids. With an all encompassing fit, it has many of the tried and true features known to Scorpion. The new elements are ones that bring weight savings, better fit and comfort plus improved ventilation.

Scorpion Graphics for Fall 2012 Preview

The new Scorpion helmet graphics for 2012 have been released, are available for pre-order and new to RevZilla.com.  There is also an assortment of solid colored Scorpion VX-R70 helmets being released with the Fragment as well.



The Scorpion VX-R70 Fragment helmet is new in the lineup of off-road, brilliantly painted graphics, this one in multi-color black, blue and green. The shell is TCT, shatter resistant and aerodynamic with advanced dual-density EPS. The moisture wicking helmet liner and cheek pads are removable and washable. With an AirFit liner inflation system you can customize the interior to fit your head. 

The Scorpion VX-R70 Flux helmet sports another new helmet graphic available in five colors with concentric stripes and stars. All these Scorpion helmets are loaded with technology and features that offer a ton of bang for your buck. A composite shell is shatter resistant and has aero-tuned ventilation. The closure is a titanium double-d ring for extra security.





The Scorpion VX-34 Demented helmet is the newest graphic in the VX-34 offering. Like the other models, the rider is given aggressive styling at an affordable price, in a lightweight polycarbonate shell. The liner set and mudguard are removable and replaceable. The ventilation system is designed with large intake manifolds and four rear vents that allow maximum airflow. The graphic in black or white background has a pop art feel.




Yet another great graphic is available in the Scorpion VX-34 Trix. The features of the "Trix," include all the same spec's as the other VX-34 models. With multiple colors: white, yellow, green, orange and red, it gives a intergalactic/tribal feel.




The Scorpion EXO-500 Dalia 2 helmet joins a team of existing EXO-500's known for differentiating features. No sunglasses are necessary with the drop down inner sunscreen with both sides treated with anti-fog coating. The graphic is for women who want a feminine look without it being overly so, available in black or white with a vining floral pattern.

Arai CT-Z Helmet First Look

New! The Arai CT-Z helmet features the convenience of an open-face helmet with a Snell rating. With removable and replaceable interior liners, the cheek pad design is more low-profile. Generous venting with upper vents borrowed from the Arai Corsair V helmet plus brow vents to direct air to the temples. A removable visor reduces sun glare and has minimal lift at highway speeds. The thinner faceshield pods should increase aerodynamics on the CT-Z.

Expect it to release this fall, we'll update more as it comes to light.  RevZillaTV will also shoot a video when we get our hands on one of the new lids.

The Firstgear Mesh Lo boots are comfortable enough to wear all day. With a mesh upper and lace-up fit, they will keep your feet cool. These boots will be good for three seasons but aren't waterproof.  A hard ankle and toe box protection assure you are not compromising protection for light weight wear-ability. This lineup of Firstgear boots are available in D and E widths, an advantage for those folks with wider feet.

Akrapovic Exhaust is a name synonymous with quality and is the industry leader in aftermarket motorcycle exhaust systems. All of the Akrapovic exhaust systems focus on three concepts: power and performance, quality/aesthetics and weight savings. There are three types of systems, the first of these is the bolt on used for older OEM fitments and if the stock muffler is being used. They give the advantages of weight savings, performance gains and aesthetic improvements.


Slip-on systems have bike specific shapes (over 65), are easy to install and have the most offerings overall.  They are more affordable than the full system with the shape, size, length and end cap all optimized for bike specific performance gains. This system gives additional improvement to weight savings, performance and aesthetics.

Full systems are divided into Racing or Evolution and from a performance standpoint, they're identical. The racing line is stainless steel with carbon or titanium muffler options and a carbon fiber end cap.  The evolution line is a full titanium version of the racing system with carbon fiber or titanium muffler and carbon fiber end cap. This system has the largest weight savings and is top of the line in regards to performance and aesthetics. 

Harley Davidson systems have new product offerings for 2011, in all stainless, chrome or black options. Full systems are called open systems and slip on are also available.

Full systems are tuned to work with 95% of stock fuel settings; only HD and some off-road bikes need to be re-tuned after full systems install. No matter what you purchase, everything you need for installation including instructions will be in the box.

TCX X-Miles Boots Introduction

The TCX X-Miles Boot is a mid-height boot and worthy of consideration for those who like a shorter boot or have difficulty fitting a full calf. The X-Miles is full grain leather with front and rear padding for comfort, and malleolus protection for the bony prominence on each side of the ankle. The lining is waterproof with a replaceable anatomic foot-bed. The ankle impact protection includes a shift pad integrated in the sole and reinforced heel and toe counter, entry is Velcro. It may take longer for this boot to break in, but will be more supportive and protective in the long run..

The Miles should be a solid 4-season classic
touring or commuting choice for a rider who wants the whole package but prefers a low / mid boot.

Scorpion EXO-R2000 Helmet

It just hit our radar that for Fall 2012, Scorpion Exo will bring to market their latest sport helmet to the Scorpion riding elite and those who just want a great sub-$400 race helmet option. The Scorpion EXO-R2000, which is specifically designed for the race track should hit late August, here is what we currently know:

• Emergency Neck / Roll Quick Release System to help the medics save you
• Most if not all of the normal Scorpion features (KwikWick II, Air fit, Everclear Shield etc)

Sidi Trial Zero Boots Review

The Sidi Trial Zero boot was specifically developed for trials riding. They're similar to the Sidi Discovery Rain with a decrease in tech and price, yet with many of the desirable features.  These boots are made with Lorica and split grain leather that will protect legs from heat. Icon Airmada Helmet Preview

We know the Icon Airmada Helmet is coming, we know it's coming for you. Ultimately released in the Fall 2012, the Airmada will be the newest addition to the Icon helmet line, another little brother to the premium Icon Airframe.

We expect to see updated venting, aerodynamics and features which are well thought out and add another level to the solid foundation the Alliance has provided for the last few years.

Currently you can see Team Brammo's Steve Atlas rocking the Airmada Helmet. More to come as we get closer to the Fall, we hope Icon holds up its end of the bargain.

Nexx XR1R Carbon Helmet & Nexx XR1R Diablo Helmet Review

The Nexx XR1R Carbon Helmet


The Nexx XR1R Carbon helmet is a tri-composite: carbon fiber, Kevlar and fiberglass, making it extremely strong but also lightweight.  This Nexx helmet is the second lightest helmet we have in our lineup at 1200-1400 grams. The eye port is large, giving a wide periphery with unimpeded vision. Packaged with the helmet are 7 to 8 pads, the ergo padding system, to custom fit the medium oval shape.

The Nexx XR1R Carbon Helmet Review:






CoolMax liners are removeable and washable. The PC Lexanshield is anti-scratch with four settings and easy locking system.  With 2 inlets and 4 outlets, the helmet vents well. The ear reinforcements are double and therefore quiet and allow for the addition of a communication system. The helmet is DOT, ECE/22-05 and NBR-7471:2001 approved.


The Nexx XR1R Diablo Helmet

This Nexx XR1R Diablo helmet's exterior is wrapped in leather. Features are identical to the Nexx Carbon Helmet reviewed above with great peripheral vision and ergo padding system to custom fit the medium oval shape. ECE/22-05 and DOT approved.

Tour Master 2012 Fall Gear Review

The Tour Master Intake Air 3 jacket replaces the Air 2 and is a three season mesh jacket: spring, summer and fall. With an American cut and boxy fit, it has plenty of adjustability. With a Aqua-Therm two-stage waterproof and insulated liner, the jacket can be configured to match your needs. There are elastic and snap sleeve take-up straps at the forearm and bicep, with adjustable waist belts and TPR pulls to help fine tune the fit.  Velcro cuffs have microfiber as does the collar to prevent chafing.


Tour Master Intake Air 3 Jacket Review:


Armor-link mesh material and 600 denier Carbolex combine with 1680 denier ballistic polyester in the impact areas. Removable CE armor is at the elbows and shoulders with an articulated triple-density back protector. This Tour Master has great air flow with no loss of protection. Two types of reflective material increase nighttime visibility.

The jacket is available in 6 color combinations up to 4XL, with tall available in sizes M-2XL.






The Tour Master Draft Air 2 jacket is a two to three season jacket. It is the most basic offering in mesh in this lineup and with an American cut tends to run a half to a size large.  A step down from the Tour Master Intake Air 3 with a waterproof liner but no insulation. Armor-link mesh material combined with 600 denier Carbolex in the impact areas create a well-ventilated garment with protection.



Tour Master Draft Air 2 Jacket Review:



With many of the same features as the Intake Air 3: the CE-approved armor, adjustable sleeve and waist tabs, microfiber-lined collar and cuffs, extra long back and two types of reflective material.

This jacket is available in four color combinations and sizes S-3XL.





The Tourmaster Solution WP Air boot is a highly breathable waterproof boot with HiPora waterproof membrane which breathes for warm weather riding and easily covers three seasons: spring, summer and fall. Reasonably priced, this boot comes in both wide sizes and women's sizes. Features include a molded nylon shin protector and ankle guard backed by foam, tecnoGL thermoplastic heel cup and toe cap and preformed orthopedic vibration absorbing footbed.


The Tourmaster Solution WP Air Boot Review:

The successor to the original Nomad, The Tour Master Nomad 2.0 boot, showcase numerous improvements. Using  HiPora, these boots have a waterproof yet breathable membrane. The slightly lower toe box allows for easier shifting. A removable padded foot-bed with soft interior lining increases comfort.  This is a work style boot with lugged, oil-resistant, anti-slip sole.



Tour Master Nomad 2.0 Boot Review:




Like the Men's version, the Tour Master Women's Intake Air 3 jacket replaces the Air 2 and is a three season mesh jacket: spring, summer and fall. With a Aqua-Therm two-stage waterproof and insulated liner, the jacket can be configured to meet your comfort needs.





Tour Master Women's Intake Air 3 Jacket Review:

CE-approved armor is at the elbow and shoulder with an articulated tripl-density back protector. A zippered chest map pocket, hand warmer pockets, internal pouch and mobile media pocket add to the features.









The Tour Master Women's Transition 3 jacket is a 3/4 length 600 denier Carbolex and 1680 denier ballistic polyester shell. It incorporates a waterproof, breathable Rainguard barrier to keep you dry yet release perspiration. It's a three to four season jacket with a full zip out quilted liner for cooler temperatures and 8 vents for warmer weather. The overall style is refined from the Transition 2 with 360 degree reflective piping, new front pocket design and TPR closure at wrist.


Tour Master Women's Transition 3 Jacket Review:

CE-approved armor is at the elbow and shoulder with an articulated triple-density back protector. Microfiber lined collar and cuffs are soft, yet durable.
