Dainese Scout Gore-Tex Gloves Review

I know it's July 12, and most everywhere is blazing hot right now, so most won't have a pressing need for the Dainese Scout Gore-Tex Gloves. However, these gloves need to be written about, if only as a vehicle to show off how slick they look and go into some detail about their cold weather performance. Brand new for 2011, the Scouts complement the Jerico gloves as the most high-end cold weather sport and ADV touring in the Dainese lineup. With protective elements that cover you in all impact areas and a Gore-Tex waterproof breathable membrane alongside a thermal liner, the Dainese Scout Gore-Tex Gloves will easily be your go-to winter glove choice.

Let's dive right into the materials that make up the Dainese Scout GTX Gloves. The backhand of the Scout is constructed of Stone PU, a highly abrasion-resistant proprietary textile that affords some stretch for mobility and comfort. The palm is a full goatskin construction, which is lighter and offers comparable abrasion resistance to cowhide, but affords a great deal more dexterity. There are double layers of goatskin in high-wear areas to preserve the longevity of this glove in addition to foam inserts at the heel of the hand that will dampen vibration and also provide some resistance to impact in a get-off-and-slide scenario. There are elasticated panels at the backhand and thumb for uninhibited mobility when working the controls.

At the backhand, you'll see white stitching across the main knuckles and at the fingers. This stitching surrounds the techno impact protectors. The techno armor technology is thermoformed hard plastic that heat-bonded to stainless steel net, eliminating any stitching that would create a weak point and a potential damage area. In short, this is streamlined and sleek protection that provides a high degree of impact resistance. At the pinky, you'll find the Dainese Distortion Control system, found on many of their race gloves. This hard PU insert acts as a slider in the event of a lowside crash, and prevents any twisting or torsion on the pinky which could cause serious damage.

If you don't know Gore-Tex, it is the most breathable of any waterproof membrane on the market (they pioneered the technology) and guaranteed for life. If this glove ever leaks, it will be replaced with no questions asked. There is a Primaloft thermal liner in the Scout gloves, which is an extremely insulating material that is used by the US military and can also be found in outdoor gear such as sleeping bags and hunting equipment. One of our favorite features of the Scout gloves is the cuff, which is a full gauntlet that features a stretch material and can be cinched down extremely snugly to streamline easily under your jacket. Staying true to Dainese, these gloves are sleek and provide a ton of style and performance.

Alpinestars knows how to make leather motorcycle gear. Everything from their race suits, jackets, gloves, and boots are always great products in terms of protection, comfort, and value. The Alpinestars Apex Drystar Gloves are no exception. The Apex is designed for the everyday rider, whether it be the commuter or the long distance tourer, and is a highly technical glove especially for being under the hundred dollar price point.

The first thing you notice about this glove when you first put it on is the warm thermal Drystar liner. Drystar is a waterproof breathable material developed by Alpinestars that's designed to keep your hands dry and vented without letting outside water enter; think AStars' version of Gore-Tex. The goatskin leather also aids in the mobility and the lightweight feeling of the glove and gives the Apex a very short break in time to get comfortable. Waterproof textile is used in areas less prone to impacts and abrasion is used to help improve the comfort of the glove.  The full gauntlet on the glove is very large and designed to fit over a motorcycle jacket cuff. This will help prevent wind, water and rain from entering the jacket through the sleeve. This glove is designed
for riding through rain, cold, and anything else Mother Nature
can throw at you.

The Apex glove is full of technical features that you just don't see on every touring glove. To start, there is a large hard PU molded knuckle protector sitting on the front of your hand. This gives your hand a ton of protection in the high impact area of the knuckle and gives a little bit of a race style. Behind the knuckle protector is an accordion stretch panel which makes moving your fingers easier when reaching for the controls and ensures the knuckle protector stays in place. Alpinestars also incorporated stretch panels on each one of the fingers to help aid motion. There's extra padding running down the outside of the palm and the hand, an area that is commonly ignored by glove makers but is vital in the event of a low side slide. On the underside of the
glove there is a pull flap to make getting this glove on and
off a little easier.

You're really going to have a hard time finding another waterproof motorcycle glove that offers this much at this price point. Sizes go from SM to 3XL and run snug like most Euro gloves. Colors are Black-Black, Black-Blue, and Black-Red.

Gerbing's Heated Glove Buying Guide

With an array of options to keep your hands nice and toasty on winter rides, Gerbing's Heated Gloves are made for any application. From the Gerbing's Heated Glove Liner,  to be worn under your winter glove, through the protection of the long-distance touring Gerbing's T5 Heated Gloves, all riders from commuters to long distance tourers are covered. Featuring the proprietary Gerbing's Microwire, which was developed in response to a contract with the US Military that required much faster heating times, the gloves heat extremely quick and keep you warm and comfortable during cold weather rides. Cold hands can ruin a ride for a multitude of reasons, including limited feel for controls, which makes riding extremely dangerous.

First is the Gerbing's Heated Glove Liner, constructed from Stretch Cordura for an optimal snug fit and designed to be worn under a pair of winter motorcycle gloves. The outer palm is constructed with Amara, a synthetic suede material that will grip to the inside of the glove, while the Microfiber heating elements on the back of the hand is protected from abrasion by Nylon inserts. If you're unfamiliar with Gerbing's, Microwire is tiny stainless steel filaments that heat up extremely fast (within four seconds), used by Gerbing's thanks to a requirement of the Department of Defense. The wrist closes with a soft Neoprene fastener and the glove is lined with Brushed Tricot for added warmth. The palm of the gloves is not heated so that they can work in conjunction with heated grips.

Moving up the line, we get to the Gerbing's Nubuck Heated Gloves. Utilizing the same Microwire heating technology, the Nubck gloves are made from buffed leather which gives them a soft-as-velvet feel on the hands. The interior features a protective waterproof breathable membrane to keep your hands dry in the event of precipitation. There is a velcro wrist adjuster and a large gauntlet to help keep the heat inside the gloves. The Microwire exists throughout the back of the hand and down the fingers and thumb to keep your hands warm, while the palm remains heat-free so the gloves can work on a bike with heated grips. With limited protection in these gloves, consider them an excellent option for short-term cold weather riding or as a passenger glove.

Getting into the long-distance touring glove options, the Gerbing's G3 Heated Gloves are built from drum-dyed premium leather that is extremely supple and pliable and molds to the hand. Microwire heats each of the fingers and thumb in addition to the back of the hand. For complete protection from the elements, the G3 Gloves a fully waterproof and breathable Aquatex liner. Gerbing's suggests that you treat the leather of the gloves with Nikwax to further aid in waterproofing. Inside the glove is Thinsulate insulation with a soft and comfortable brushed tricot liner. These gloves feature a full gauntlet that is neoprene-lined and has a cinch to assist in blocking wind. Rounding out the feature set is the gel-padded reinforcements on the palm for resistance to abrasion and wear.

The granddaddy of the line are the Gerbing's T5 Heated Gloves. With an exterior constructed of a mixture of supple leather and textile for durability and safety, the T5 Gloves offer the best chance to stay warm, dry and protected in cold weather riding. The Thermolite insulation provides optimal warmth while the Hipora waterproof breathable membrane ensures a completely dry and comfortable ride. For protection, the T5 Gloves have gel padding in in the finger knuckles and in the palm. The palm also features non-slip grip paneling. The fingers are pre-curved for an articulated fit and the stretch paneling across the back of the hand provides ease of motion. The extra-long gauntlet is neoprene-lined with a velcro adjuster and a cinch to keep heat in and cold wind out. These are the
choice for the long distance winter rider.

Held Freezer & Held Warm N Dry Gloves Review

It's about to get frosty in most parts of the country. At RevZilla HQ in Philly, we already have lows in the 40s. And before any of us knows it, it will be sub-40º everyday. It's time to start taking a look at some winter motorcycle glove options. There's no better place to start the search than with Held, a company virtually ubiquitous in the motorcycle industry, manufacturing gloves since 1923. Today we're going to take a look at two extreme cold weather gloves from the Held Glove Company, the Held Freezer Glove and the Held Warm N Dry Glove.

First up is our video review of the Held Freezer.

The Held Freezer Glove is soft aniline cowhide throughout with a water-repelling treatment on the leather. The liner is Primaloft, which is known for its use in sleeping bags and military applications. It is an extremely plush and comfortable microfiber fabric that provides exceptional insulation and will keep your hands nice and toasty. The Freezer also has a built-in Gore-Tex membrane which provides waterproofing and windproofing but also allows your hand to breath: perspiration can escape through but precipitation can not penetrate. For convenience, there is a visor wiper on the left index finger to clean your shield on long rides. The temperfoam injection across the knuckle and the Keprotec at the ball of the thumb provide protection
while the stretch paneling throughout the glove allows for
ease of motion. We consider this a top-tier extreme cold weather
sport touring glove.

The Held Warm N Dry Glove is, in our opinion, the go-to glove for extreme cold weather ADV touring.  With a Gore-Tex waterproof breathable membrane and a liner that is a combination of Gore-Tex Thermoplush and pique push-pull, the Warm N Dry ensures that you will stay just that: warm and dry. The goatskin palm is also thin enough to work in conjunction with heated grips, a great feature that meshes well with adventure bikes. The palm also has significant leather reinforcements in high-wear areas and a SuperFabric-coated temperfoam injection at the base of the palm to help protect in the event of a get-off and slide. The knuckle of the Held Warm-N-Dry is protected by a leather-wrapped plastic hard part and there is also 3M Scotchlite
reflective for visibility and stretch fabric for flexibility. The glove
is a mixture of textile, cowhide and goatskin. Before you
get into the range of heated gloves, this is one of the highest-end,
from a protection and weatherproofing standpoint, ADV touring winter gloves.

Cold Weather Motorcycle Glove Guide

To round out our series of winter motorcycle gear guides, we scoured our inventory and decided on three groups of winter motorcycle gloves. We broke it down into "Cool Weather Sport Touring Gloves," "Cold Weather Touring Gloves," and "Extreme Cold Weather Adventure Gloves." As you move through the ranks, the materials used improve, including protective elements and creature comforts, and you get vaster temperature range & precipitation coverage. The rider who is riding five miles back and forth from work won't need a brawny glove in all likelihood just as the adventure touring rider in freezing temperatures will want to look for something more bulky than a basic winter riding glove. That explains how we broke down our categories. Let's get into the video, our Cold Weather Motorcycle Glove Guide.

Cool Weather Sport Touring Gloves

In our first bucket of gloves, the milder temperature range array, you'll find motorcycle gloves from Firstgear, REV'IT! and Cortech. The Firstgear Navigator glove and Firstgear Kilimanjaro glove (pictured at left) each feature a Hipora waterproof breathable membrane that will keep your hands dry while the Kilimanjaro has Thinsulate for the lining and the Navigator uses a warmer Thermolite liner. Consider the Navigator the leather counterpart to the Kilimanjaro. Both these gloves perform well in cool to cold weather basic riding scenarios.

The sportiest looking glove of all the gloves we show in this video is the Cortech Scarab glove, constructed from a mix of leather, goatskin & textile. All of this is backed with a Hipora waterproof breathable membrane. For protection, the Scarab has a molded titanium/carbon knuckle with finger and wrist protection as well.

The top-of-the-line glove in this group is the REV'IT! Zenith H2O glove, which provides a mix of goatskin and leather with coated carbon hard shell knuckles. The upgrade here being the Hydratex membrane from REV'IT! which will be more breathable than the waterproofing in the other gloves. The addition of SuperFabric on the pinky is another upgrade on this top-end cool/cold weather sport touring glove.

Cold Weather Touring Gloves

In the next lineup, you're looking at Cold Weather Touring Gloves that will stand up well to all the elements and a deeper temperature range than the previous grouping. Here you'll find gloves from REV'IT!, Tour Master, and Held. This is where you'll start to see advanced technologies such as Gore-Tex membranes and so forth. The Tour Master Winter Elite Glove is the starting point for this bunch and also the thickest. Constructed from goatskin and sheepskin with Thinsulate Liteloft insulation, the Winter Elite also features a visor wiper for convenience, a large storm cuff, and a built-in nylon polar cover for the extremes of temperature and precipitation.

From REV'IT!, the new REV'IT! Orion GTX Glove features Gore-Tex while the REV'IT! Kelvin H2O Glove was voted WebBikeWorld's Best Winter Glove 2009. The Orion is 1000D ripstop Cordura and 500D PWRShell with a Thermolite tri-fleece liner. The distinguishing factor is the Gore-Tex membrane that gives the highest level of waterproof breathability. Period. The Kelvin (pictured) is a full leather construction with Hydratex waterproof breathability. The distinguisher here is the Schoeller PCM Insulator which is a temperature regulator that absorbs heat. If the hand is too hot, the PCM absorbs it and your hand cools; if your hand gets cold, the PCM releases the heat.

Rounding out this group is the Held Freezer Glove, a water-repellent cowhide glove with a Gore-Tex membrane for waterproof breathability. The lining here is what's special: Primaloft, used by the military, is an extremely lightweight microfiber insulation that stays amazingly warm no matter the application. That does it for category two.

Extreme Cold Weather Adventure Gloves

If you're an Adventure rider or you want to ride really long distances in the cold weather, you need look no further than this group of gloves. These are the extremely technical gloves with the most futuristic technologies and extensive R&D. The Gerbing's T5 Heated Gloves are the only pair in this group that is heated and are best suited for the rider dipping into the lowest possible temperature ranges. Gerbing's Microwire Heating Technology was developed at the behest of the military.

Two gloves from REV'IT!, the REV'IT! Alaska GTX Glove & REV'IT! Bastion GTX Glove (pictured at left) feature Gore-Tex membranes, the Alaska being the leather alternative to the Bastion's extreme textile construction. Both of these gloves will handle the freezing elements with comfort and style, with the main differentiating factor being the SuperFabric and MotoGP elements that are in the Bastion.

The Held Warm N Dry glove is Held's highest end cold weather glove. With a mix of cowhide, textile and goatskin, the Warm N Dry also has a Gore-Tex membrane for waterproof breathability. SuperFabric provides reinforcement, the knuckles are protected by hard plastic armor, and the liner is Gore-Tex Thermoplush Fleece. Keeping in mind the Adventure Touring rider, Held kept the palm on these gloves thin enough for use with heated grips. This is a great Extreme Cold Weather glove.

Finally, our last glove is the Dainese Jerico Glove, probably the slickest and cleanest design of the bunch. The Jerico is made from Cowhide-Clarino, a synthetic abrasion-resistant textile material. It has a full Gore-Tex membrane and utilizes Primaloft insulation. It is the highest-priced glove for a good reason: it outperforms every other glove on the table and of course, offers that classic Dainese style.

That's quite a bit of information but we hope very informative. Our intention is to take some of the pain out of figuring all these details on your own. We hope we met our goal of connecting the dots in terms of subtle differences of winter motorcycle gloves.

The main knuckle protection is EVA foam, with PU injected reinforcements in the finger knuckles and foam injections at the palm and thumb. It is lightweight and extremely abrasion-resistant with excellent tear resistance provided by the ripstop fabric. There is also Schoeller Keptrotec built underneath the goatskin palm that provides stretch and comfort while the goatskin offers superior abrasion resistance and tactile feel.

For waterproofing and breathability, the integrated GORE-TEX membrane has you covered: your hands will be dry and comfortable no matter the weather as the membrane fends off incoming precipitation but allows perspiration from your hand to pass through. Couple that with the Thermolite push-pull tri-fleece liner and your riding not only protected but in a great deal of comfort as well.

As always, the creature comforts make their way into the REV'IT Orion GTX gloves; REVIT never leaves those out. You have 3M scotchlite reflective at the cuff and fingers for visibility; an adjustment strap at the wrist with an adjustment tab at the cuff; stretch paneling at the back of the hand to keep the glove in place and keep you comfortable when you're working the controls; digital grip patches on the index finger and the webbing of the hand for enhanced grip and control; and finally, our favorite, the visor wiper on the left index finger to easily clean your shield at any point in your ride.

REV'IT used the GORE-TEX membrane for the highest level of breathability and water/weatherproofing and utilized state-of-the-art fabrics and protection elements derived from their MotoGP gloves to create a breakthrough winter glove.

We are really excited about the new live of REV'IT! GORE-TEX motorcycle gear. Combining the leader of the pack in ADV touring gear with the most proven and trusted manufacturer of waterproof breathable gear is a home run all day long. The REVIT Bastion GTX glove does not disappoint. The outershell is constructed using teflon-coated 1000D ripstop Cordura, water-repellent goatskin and suede leather, and Schoeller Dynamic which is an extremely durable stretch fabric that breathes well and dries quickly. The Schoeller also utilizes their proprietary Nanosphere material, which is a hydrophobic fabric to which water and dirt can not affix to. This makes it really easy to keep clean and extends the life of the glove. The addition of SuperFabric, tiny laser-welded ceramic plates 14x more abrasion-resistant than Kevlar, adds to the overall protective value of this glove.

Of course you've got the GORE-TEX waterproof breathable membrane built into the core of the glove to keep you warm and dry in the cold and wet months, but you've also got a Thermolite Plus push-pull tri-fleece liner. This offers a very comfortable feel against the hand and also provides a great level of warmth. As far as protection, REV'IT! borrowed heavily from their MotoGP gloves for the REVIT Bastion GTX. PU injected finger knuckles and backhand protection with TPU hard-shell little finger protector, a dual-comp honeycomb palm slider with added EVA foam reinforcements at the thumb and wrist. You're going to be safe in this glove.

There are also all of the subtle creature comforts that REV'IT never leaves out of the mix. Stretch paneling at the fingers and the back of the hand so the hard parts stay in place and your hand is never uncomfortable, gripping the controls or otherwise. Goat Window grip patches are integrated into the first two fingers and across the palm for superior tactile feel and grip. Elastication at the wrist aids in accurate fit and allows the glove to be worn inside or outside a jacket with a single velcro cuff. Finally, and this may be our favorite feature, is the visor wiper on the index finger of the left hand. This makes it really simple to keep your visor clean when you're on those long adventure rides.

Straight up, this is a phenomenal glove that is sure to be a big hit in our winter glove line-up.
