TCX X-Rap Gore-Tex: Shoes for Motorcyclists

You may remember the TCX X-Rap Shoes released Fall '13. You may have bought a pair. You may have stepped in a puddle and wished they were more waterproof. If this is you, TCX is your genie in a bottle. If you've never heard of the X-Rap, then you are in for a treat!

Rising quickly through the ranks from manufacturers like Sidi, Dainese, REV'IT!, and TCX, fashionably urban moto shoes have struck a new chord, challenging the typical leather boot to step outside of itself and take some risk. Gone are the days of the monotone lug-sole leather mid-calf boot with a single zip running up the side. Whoever first posed the question should be given a crown and a medal: "Where can I find a pair of motorcycle shoes that don't look like the wild west or Star Wars?".

In order for this question to be successfully answered, two criteria must be met. Sacrificing protection is not an option and this must be achieved in a subtle package. Watching all these boot and apparel brands come to this conclusion has been refreshing, but when it comes to casual shoes, I think TCX is most on the money. Subtle branding, un-yielding style, and consistent protection round out every model.

This Spring, TCX adds a Gore-Tex option to the X-rap Shoes, giving them even more function than before. At this rate, why bother buying Sketchers or Dockers any more? Motorcycle shoes last longer, look cooler, protect better, and this one is guaranteed waterproof! Of course, if one were to follow that train of thought to its logical conclusion, we would all be walking the streets with Rukka Armas jackets and Alpinestars Track pants "just in case".  I digress... The TCX X-Rap Gore-Tex Shoes are guaranteed to keep you dry and like all TCX, come with ankle, toe, heel, and flexible sole protection.

Perhaps one day when electric motorcycles are stocked at your local pharmacy and tires are shipped via drone from your local Home Depot, everyone will be able to walk into a Walmart and pick up a pair of shoes as cool as these. Until then ... RevZilla's got you covered. Luckily, you are safe for now, because only motorcyclists get to wear gear this cool.

Cardo Scala Rider Qz: Silence is Golden!

I can't tell you how many times a customer has asked me what to buy if they don't want to talk to anyone. The conversation goes something like this

"When I ride, I want to relax, enjoy the landscape, and be alone with my thoughts for a while, not to be distracted by everyone talking to me. I don't need an intercom, I just want to listen to music and be able to make an outgoing call in an emergency. What should I get?"

While the world of bluetooth headsets continues to offer increasing functionality, better range, more features, bigger group conversations, and voice recognition name dialing, they have not until now offered a simple solution to getting tunes in your helmet without all the bells and whistles.

The Cardo Qz Bluetooth Headset changes things. Instead of spending north of $200 for features you don't need and will never use, how about saving about $100 of those hard earned bills and getting exactly what you need -- no more, no less? The Scala Rider Qz keeps it simple with these basic features and they've even made the button interface simpler!

  • MP3/iPod Music streaming with Stereo Bluetooth
  • Smartphone or GPS integration with one-touch Hot-Dial number
  • VOX activation for all commands
Easy enough, right? Next time you want to tune out the world and be one with your machine, take the Qz Headset with you. Passing riders won't be able to chime into your thoughts, your buddy won't be able to stream his music to your helmet, your pillion will be reduced hand-signals, and you won't be able to listen to the ride leader's monologue as you pass every historic milestone.

Why didn't someone think of this earlier?

New Cardo G9x: Booms, Jacks, and Music sharing!

The Devil's in the details! When you go to pick up your Bluetooth Headset unit this spring, make sure you know the difference between the Cardo G9 and the new for 2014 Cardo G9x!

While we wouldn't consider this a sequel, there are a few key updates that are worth noting. The Cardo G9x now allows for music sharing from rider to passenger. This has been clamored on for a while considering that Sena beat them to the punch with this feature last year. Basically, this means that you as rider (or passenger) can control the tunes yourself and broadcast your music of choice to your buddy, whether in the seat next to you or a few hundred meters away on their own bike. This comes especially in handy when purchasing a Cardo G9x Powerset since it's kinda hard to share by yourself!

Update number two comes in the form of the speaker jack. Customization is key and quickly becoming a commodity with Bluetooth communication. Being able to switch out speakers for ease of wiring, or a custom solution is important for many riders. The G9x unit allows the speakers to be easily detached for whatever reasons you are creative enough to cook up.

Last but not least, the G9x made the switch to Hybrid microphones. One of the last in the current family to make the switch, a "Hybrid" microphone starts out with a wire and turns into a mountable boom after a few inches. This means no more bending and twisting to get your boom under the chin bar. Simply use the flexible wire portion to mount the boom portion on the inside for a more streamline installation. Not your thing? It still comes with the basic corded mic too -- never fear.

Bluetooth tech has come a long way in the past 5 years and we can't imagine how far it has to go in the next 5. The Scala Rider G9 has been an impressive addition to the Cardo stable since its inception, but why stop there? Make it better.

New Speed and Strength SS650 Helmet & Graphic

The SS650 is a new entry to Speed and Strength’s three-quarter helmet line up. It has the modern technical look of the SS2200 at a price point that is more akin to the classic looking SS700. It accomplishes this feat by using the same shell construction method of the SS700 only now with a new engineered blend of thermoplastics for 2014. The Speed & Strength SS650 borrows more than just good looks from the SS2200; it is packed with many higher end features like a moisture wicking liner and a flip down sun visor. The SS650 is best suited for the sport touring or commuter crowd that needs a helmet to perform in warmer climates.

The shell of the SS650 is sculpted for aerodynamics and ventilation. There are two intake ducts to pull cool air through the top of the helmet, then two corresponding exhausts for venting out the heated air. The intake ducts can be closed off to enable this to be a true multi-season helmet. Another higher-end feature is the ratcheting Speed Strap. This allows easy on, easy off closure without having to fuss with D rings that are normally found at this price point.  If you are looking for a technical three-quarter helmet at an entry-level price point, look no further than the SS650.

Speed & Strength SS650 Helmet Review:

The new for 2014 SS650 helmet is also available in a new graphics package called The Speed & Strength SS650 Heart and Soul. It has a light metallic gold frosting over a black base coat. The frosting is more subtle than a metal flake and parlays well to the gold and silver graphics. The S&S branding is subtle, only a small script across the front crown and at the lower rear above the DOT designation. The stylized graphics seem to take an Art Nouveau approach to a modern tribal pattern, so it almost has a retro feel to it. What do you think?

New Speed & Strength Gloves: Simple and to the Point

Brand new for Spring 2014 are two brand new gloves from Speed and Strength!  Wether you're riding a chopped and bobbed HD, or a Gixxer with a stunt cage, they've got one just for you.

Up first are the Stars and Stripes Gloves, a new addition to S&S's Stars and Stripes line, which is targeted towards cruiser and V-twin riders.  If you were looking for a riding glove with classic style and features, then look no further.  Full leather construction, reinforced gel palm padding and articulated fingers are the standout attributes on these gloves.  Simple and to the point, the Speed & Strength Stars and Stripes Gloves are the perfect compliment to an old-school biker look.

Speed & Strength Stars and Stripes Gloves Review:

The other new glove from S&S is a collaboration with Mixed Martial Arts clothing company, TAPOUT.  The Speed & Strength TAPOUT Gloves have a short cuff race fit with a reinforced leather palm for abrasion resistance and grip, and a mesh textile upper for breathability.  Added protection comes from a TPU knuckle protector embossed with the TAPOUT logo.  If you're a fan, be sure to check out the rest of the S&S/TAPOUT Moto line which includes an Armored Hoody and SS700 Full Face helmets.  "Ride Strong," with TAPOUT Moto!

Speed & Strength TAPOUT Gloves Review:

Whether you are looking for a pair of classic leather gloves, or something to match up with the rest of the S&S Tapout collection of gear, Speed and Strength has a set of finger dwellings for you.

New Speed & Strength Graphics Tell a Graphic story

A Moto Mercenary had the Urge to Overkill until he relaxed by hanging out in the Wicked Garden. The product lines from Speed & Strength tell the story of a man tormented by his compulsion for blood and his atonement through horticultural therapy. We all have our demons that we have to deal with and tending to tomatoes can expel those demons. If you are relatively well adjusted, you won't be needing all that treatment. You can just rock the new helmet graphics for the SS1100 and the SS1300.

The SS1100's Advanced Thermopoly Alloy Shell (A.T.P.A) dons the Speed & Strength SS1100 Moto Mercenary graphic in bright green. Soldiers of fortune will appreciate the Cool-Core removable washable and moisture wicking liner while they shoot to thrill (see emblem). The All Clear anti-scratch and anti-fog face shield keep vision clear to spot any tangos.

The Urge Overkill is a much more subdued graphic with grey and black digital camo and various colored accents. Top off the Urge Overkill jacket and pants with the Speed & Strength SS1100 Urge Overkill Helmet. Matchy-matchy is not over-the-top or an overkill in my book.

Speed & Strength SS1100 Urge Overkill Helmet Review:

The Speed & Strength SS1300 Wicked Garden graphic was not designed in Boston, though it is pretty wicked awesome with venus fly traps among skulls. The SS1300 offers the great features of the SS1100, but the SS1300's upgraded vent layout keeps riders cool. You have to be cool when wearing this graphic. It has carnivorous plants on it. Wear the Wicked Garden mesh jacket to be super cool with added airflow.

Speed & Strength SS1300 Wicked Garden Helmet Review:

Speed & Strength's new helmet graphics tell a tale of redemption for a blood thirsty merc turned gardener. If you don't have to come to grips with your savage ways, you can just wear one of the graphics that matches your bike. No need to get all transcendental.

Speed and Strength: Wickedly Protective and Bona Fide American

New for 2014, Speed and Strength introduces the American Beauty, the Heart and Soul and, of course, the Wicked Garden jacket! If you haven’t already gotten the gist via their colorful names, the first two jackets are part of their new Authentic American Collection. Each offers a little something different in terms of function, but the style is classic, American and may leave you feeling a little nostalgic.

So, let’s break it down. The Speed & Strength American Beauty Jacket is offered in two colorways. I’ve taken the liberty of renaming them. Let’s see if you can figure it out! We have Classic Harley and American Retro Party! The perforated leather is a nice touch, but the jury is still out on the stone-washed look. Paired with jeans, will you look like an 80’s babe or an interesting attempt at a Canadian Tuxedo? Either way, you’ll be making a statement. That statement will be on your forearm and it will say American Beauty! Alternatively, the Heart and Soul jacket is a little more subtle. It will be offered in classic black, a sporty black and white, and the recently beloved retro stone-washed look. And let’s not forget, there’s a little heart and swirl design on the right arm to boot.

Speed & Strength American Beauty Jacket Review:

The American Beauty and the Speed & Strength Heart and Soul are great jackets for Spring and Fall. Equipped with full-sleeve thermal liners, both jackets can be ridden into slightly colder weather but neither will flow a ton of air in the summer. Your points of ventilation on both will be at the arms only, regulated by zippers for your convenience. Each differs a little in fit though. The American Beauty has a little more adjustment above the hips and the Heart and Soul adjustment straps sit lower for a more athletic look. The Heart and Soul will brave the elements a little better as well since it is water-resistant. The American Beauty is not. Surprise, surprise. Beauty and function don’t always co-exist but your spirit will persevere! It seems there’s a bit of wisdom behind these names, no?

Speed & Strength Heart and Soul Jacket Review:

Finally, we have the Speed & Strength Wicked Garden Jacket. Falling in line with the rest of the Wicked Garden collection, this jacket is predominantly constructed of a abrasion resistant mesh and is clearly designed for summer. In addition to four colorways and a feminine fit, the Wicked Garden is also finished with the collection’s signature design along the right arm. But Speed and Strength has just one more trick up their sleeve- each of the styles mentioned includes a CE approved Spine Protector in addition to the CE approved shoulder and elbow armor. Boom!

Speed & Strength Wicked Garden Jacket Review:

All in all, you just can’t argue with comprehensive protection. What you can argue with is ashy denim reminiscent of your youth. But why fight it? Scrunchie, Reeboks and leggings sold separately.

Wrangling Speed with New Speed & Strength Mesh Jackets

Speed and Strength has no shortage of new products being released for 2014. Their biggest challenge is going to be continuing to come up with names as dynamic as their offerings. With collections such as like the Seven Sins, the Rage With the Machine, and the Trial By Fire, their jackets evoke images of a post apocalyptic world where the motorcyclist reigns king. Leading the pack of their new summer offerings is the “Run with the Bulls” mesh jacket.

Speed and Strength are getting nostalgic as they are bringing back the “Run with the Bulls” moniker, this time there is no hoodie included with this aggressive mesh “cattle-herder” of a jacket. A “fierce” mesh frame lets air in while keeping the piercing stabbing of the bulls horns at bay. Armor upgrades now include both removable shoulder and elbow protection as well as a CE rated spine protector. Lockdown waist and sleeve adjusters along with a pants loop keeps the Speed & Strength Run With The Bulls Mesh Jacket in place when the cattle starts buckin'.

Speed & Strength Run With The Bulls Jacket Review:

If the aggressive, “Strong Arm” cut of the Run With the Bulls is too much for you then perhaps you would prefer to fly Under the Radar. The new Under the Radar jacket by Speed and Strength features the same mesh shell and CE rated armor as found in the Run With The Bulls jacket, just with a more relaxed cut. If your “steel steed” sets you in more of an upright, prone position, then the Speed & Strength Under The Radar Mesh Jacket should be just your speed.

Speed & Strength Under The Radar Jacket Review:

If using a zipper is as crazy to you as tying a tie then the Speed & Strength Lunatic Fringe Armored Mesh Jersey will pair nicely with the simplicity of your clip-on tie collection. The Lunatic Fringe is a pull over mesh shell that has removable CE rated armor in the Shoulders, Elbows, and back. Adjustments on the waist and the sleeve allow for a secure fit while the belt loop and Lycra cuffs with thumbholes prevent the sleeves from pushing up in the event of a tumble.

Speed & Strength Lunatic Fringe Jersey Review:

Each of the Lunatic Fringe, Under The Radar, and Run With The Bulls collections offer something a little different. However, all of these jackets feature a variety of colors and will be available in sizes ranging from Small to 3XL. These are just a small portion of the newest offerings to be released from Speed and Strength as of late. Whether you are a wildly aggressive bull wrangler, crazy for simplicity, or just prefer to relax and not draw attention to yourself, Speed and Strength has a jacket for you.

Speed & Strength Textiles Cry ‘Havoc!’ and Let Slip the Dogs Of War

New for a lively and quickly approaching Spring, Speed and Strength has come out with a pack of textile jackets. This new gear definitely has the bark to match their bite! We know Speed and Strength already has a rabid fanbase and they’re going to go wild over the Dogs of War lineup. Each of these jackets comes with removable Vault C.E. approved shoulder, elbow and back protection, which is a great feature because many jackets do not come with any back protection at all.

The military-themed Speed & Strength Dogs of War Jacket has a detachable hood and YKK zippers throughout. It is inspired by Speed and Strength’s partnership with the Warrior Dog Foundation which helps rehabilitate and find homes for ex-special forces military dogs. This jacket is unique in that it features a ruff looking cotton/polyester blend that should stand up to some abrasion around town.

Speed & Strength Dogs of War Jacket Review:

Also, we have the Speed & Strength Off The Chain 2.0 Textile Jacket for you strays out there. This mutt is a cross between a cool, ventilated textile jacket and a warm, comfortable hoody. With the hooded liner removed and the 4 vent zips opened up, it will flow a good amount of air straight through. It also has an abrasion resistant AR-600 shell and a concealed carry pocket so it can protect your hide while you 'protect ya neck!'

Speed & Strength Off The Chain 2.0 Textile Jacket Review:

The new textile styles from Speed and Strength cover everything from high-speed havoc to around-town aggression. These guys have been making aggressive styles since they were founded five years ago. For some, they are a little too over-the-top, but you know what they say about staying on the porch.

Rumble in the Alley: Speed & Strength Leather Jacket Launch

Does your bike’s rumble shake small countries, your helmet have a bug smear graphic, and your clothing smell of exhaust? If so, you may need reevaluate your morals, or live life like a certified bad ass and take a look at Speed and Strength’s new leather jacket line.

As if the name did not give it away, the Speed & Strength Jesse Rooke Custom Leather jacket is the perfect fit for the rider looking to make a statement, but not look like they are wearing a technical motorcycle jacket. Made from a premium brown tanned cowhide, this is going to be the perfect jacket if you are on a cruiser, chopper, or vintage ride. With perforated panels along the arms and a removable vest liner, this jacket is going to be a very versatile leather jacket.

Speed & Strength Rooke Custom Leather Jacket Review:

If ‘Murica runs in your veins, you may want to look at the “Bikes are in my Blood” leather jacket. Conceptually very similar to the Rooke Customs, the Speed and Strength Bikes Are In My Blood Leather Jacket is made of a full black leather construction with the same insulated vest liner and perforated arm panels. If you take a closer look though, you may see some hints of American flare...

Speed and Strength Bikes Are In My Blood Leather Jacket Review:

Don’t worry! S&S did not leave out the sport riders. The Top Dead Center is getting a big brother with a perforated leather version this year - a bound to be favorite among many. Available in a blue, red, or black color, the Speed and Strength Top Dead Center Leather Jacket boasts a unique asymmetrical design which will definitely stand out in the crowd of growing riders. Like the prior two models, the TDC also comes with an insulated vest liner for the cooler days.

Speed and Strength Top Dead Center Leather Jacket Review:

Whether you prefer the old-school style afforded by the S&S Rooke linup, if bikes are in your Blood, or if you gravitate towards the louder style found in the Top Dead Center collection, all three of these jackets come with CE certified shoulder, elbow, and back armor - a huge plus considering the cost of upgrading the protection. These models are going to offer all of the protective benefits of leather, but will have some good versatility on those warmer days and cooler nights with their perforation and removable thermal elements. All in all, it is difficult to argue with S&S’s new offerings - style with the full protective benefits of leather - how could you go wrong?

New Speed & Strength SS600 Graphics - Filling a Niche Market

It is hard to deny that Speed & Strength is going after a specific customer base with their SS600 helmets. For years, the vintage-styled three-quarters helmet has been the calling card of a very particular group of riders. Choice of bike is not that important, since these vintage-look bikers can be found on anything from custom cruisers to ratted-out cafe bikes. Speed & Strength has long been catering to this demographic with their SS600 helmet, and now they have come out with four new graphics.

First up is something for the rider on a custom cruiser, chopper, or show queen: the new Speed & Strength SS600 Rooke 2 Stroke Helmet. Bike fabricator Jesse Rooke has been in the limelight since 2002 and has made a name for himself by standing out from the sea of cookie-cutter customs. His designs may be polarizing, but they are intended to showcase something new and different. In partnering with Speed & Strength, they have created a 70s-style Black, Red, and Gold helmet with a matte finish.

Between snow-capped Rocky Mountains, golden Pacific Coasts, northeastern forests and shore lines, and amber fields of grain, there sure is a lot of natural beauty in the US. I wonder if this was the inspiration behind naming one SS600 graphic the American Beauty? Maybe the team responsible for naming products is a fan of Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening. Regardless of where the name draws its inspiration from, this graphic aimed towards female riders is refreshingly simple. The Speed & Strength SS600 American Beauty has a restrained design on the front of the helmet, some branding on each side, and best off all Speed & Strength has resisted the urge to paint it hot pink.

Speed & Strength SS600 American Beauty Helmet Review:

Next up is the Restomod graphic, which would be a good match for any bike that is not *quite* finished yet, or is gaining a vintage patina. The graphic design is a simple White and Gold stripe on a Matte Black base color. The helmet is made to look distressed with the addition of silver “scratches” that are painted over the entire helmet. A Speed & Strength SS600 Restomod helmet for your restomod project; now that is a great pairing.

Speed & Strength SS600 Restomod Helmet Review:

Last but not least is the most subdued new graphic for the SS600 line: the Speed Metal. This graphic is a metal flake paint finish available in Gold, Orange, Red, and Black. There are no changes to the Speed & Strength SS600 Speed Metal helmet, which still uses a Thermo-Plastic Alloy shell, a quilted inner liner, has two brow and exhaust vents, and has five snaps for attaching shields and visors.

Speed & Strength SS600 Speed Metal Helmet Review:

Sometimes looking the part is just as important as playing the part. For 2014, Speed & Strength have refreshed their SS600 helmet line so it is now easier than ever to pull off that vintage-style look.

Speed and Strength Cruise Missile Jacket & Gloves: On the Radar

3 … 2 … 1 …

And with that the earth shakes, at zero they rise,
For today is the day that the Cruise Missile flies,
With Speed unsurpassed and Strength without equal,
They are coming your way like the Independence Day sequel,
Moving hot on your six with a payload to deliver,
They arrive with an attitude that makes enemies shiver,
So gear up in the saddle grab the throttle and take hold,
Of a jacket/glove combo that is fit to behold…

Speed and Strength Cruise Missile Jacket

Strapped up and ready the first strike set to go,
Is the Cruise Missile Jacket that is not just for show,
CE armor to protect in the shoulders, elbows and back,
Should your trajectory become compromised and wobble off track,
Insulation through the vest that can be removed in the heat,
So you can navigate your two wheeled rocket with a seat,
There’s reflective trim at the neck and microfiber at the cuff,
And concealed carry pocket should your journey become rough…

Speed & Strength Cruise Missile Jacket Review:

Next comes the wallop an ordnance with punch,
The Cruise Missile glove that’s the best of the bunch,
A frame made of leather comfortably tailored and strong,
For the path to be blazed when arduously long,
High-density padding for a high-intensity ride,
And gel pads at the palm if it should end in a slide,
They are sleek, they are smooth, they don’t skimp on the style,
For the rider who moves like a ballistic projectile,

Speed & Strength Cruise Missile Gloves Review:

As the spring season is upon us and new gear abounds
As we unabashedly daydream of our bikes and their sounds,
As we yell at the windy winter weather “be gone!”,
As the muck and the mire and the misery move on,
As the warmth of the sun greets us like an old friend,
As we long for miles of open highway without end,
Speed and Strength has us ready for every turn in the road,
And their Cruise Missile line is poised to explode!

Have fun out there, be safe, and as always…

Enjoy the ride,

Wear the Spirit of Gary Nixon with New Speed & Strength Gear!

Gary Nixon, Motorcycle Hall-of-Famer, started racing at a very young age and quickly became the best at almost every form of riding. Back in the day, racers would do everything: road race, dirt track, touring, drag racing, etc. In 1963 he won his first AMA National road race, and by 1967 and 1968 he was AMA Grand National Champion -- the best at five types of motorcycle racing.

Gary was also known to be tough as nails for riding even when injured. Due to the lack of technological advancements in protection, injures were frequent. To keep it in perspective, there were no race suits with air bags. There were no neck braces. Snell was not in existence. CE ratings on body armor were not even a thought. Body armor? What’s that? Safety meant hay bales at tight corners. The Speed & Strength Gary Nixon collection pays homage through a retro-themed jacket and helmet.

The vintage leather jacket will have the late 60’s look with 2014 protection and comfort. With stars down the arms and stripes through the chest, Gary’s patriotic colors come alive. His recognizable number 9 across the back of the Speed & Strength Gary Nixon Leather Jacket will let fellow fans pick you out from the crowd, and will surely be a piece of conversation.

Speed & Strength Gary Nixon Replica Leather Jacket Review:

The jacket features 1.2 to 1.4mm cowhide and removable C.E. rated shoulder, elbow and back armor for protection. For comfort, it includes waist adjustment, perforation under the arms and a low collar. It also features reflective trim for visibility and belt loops so you don't drop your pants on a slide. There will also be a matching ¾ DOT-rated SS600 helmet with the flag on one side and his number on the other.  The Speed & Strength SS600 Gary Nixon Helmet compliments any racing patriot.

Gary was known to be a great guy and his no-B.S. racing style was leveraged by his irreverent sense of humor and genuine personality.  Now we can continue to honor and remember Gary as he truly deserves.

Speed & Strength Black 9 Collection -- Righteous Protection!

New for 2014, the S&S Black Nine collection combines style and protection for the urban rider not willing to sacrifice anything in the name of looking legit. Armor infused flannels, reinforced sneakers and new badass graphics for their classic SS600 helmet, are just some of the offerings that will be seen this year from Speed and Strength.

Whether you are cruising LA on a custom bagger or Brooklyn on a vintage CB, this understated armored flannel shirt will keep you looking righteous without letting on to the fact you value your body parts. The Speed & Strength Black 9 Moto Shirt is not just all form, but function as well, hiding kevlar reinforcements between that sweet plaid jig. Wear it by itself or under your favorite non-armored jacket for added protection. You can never go wrong with a classic flannel.

Looking to replace those tired Chuck’s with a proper moto shoe? Look no further. Speed and Strength has you covered with the Black 9 Moto Shoe. A reinforced heel and ankle mean that you can keep it casual without sacrificing style or protection. Coming in three color options (Black, Grey and Tan), the Speed & Strength Black 9 Moto Shoes offers a lot of style and versatility that will sure to be right at home in your urban jungle.

Do you know what a Black Nine is? We do not, but if you do this is your lid. This new graphic from Speed and Strength is infused with all of that grimy pool hall flavor that Fast Eddie Felson or Jax Teller would be all over. With its matte black finish and “vintage” scratches this helmet looks like it has been ridden hard and possibly used in a bar fight or two. So if you need a new lid to protect your dome on your way to the pool hall or Sons of Anarchy fan club meeting, the Speed & Strength SS600 Black Nine Helmet is for you.

Whatever Black Nine is or means we can safely assume that the new Speed and Strength line is directed towards minimalist motorcyclists and does a great job of combining style and protection. More and more companies are attempting to make gear that looks good both on and off the bike, making the use of motorcycles more prolific and allowing people to ride in confidence without sacrificing style or comfort. Speed and Strength has tapped into this new trend and as their latest product line shows, they are hellbent on giving the people what they want!

Rukka Airman Jacket: Nordic Magic & Hardcore Pavement Deterrent

How often have you found yourself riding in the blistering heat in your leather riding jacket because you want to be ATGATT (thats the hip way of saying "gear: head-to-toe"), and you find yourself somewhat envious of the guy wearing a tee shirt next you? Well Rukka is here to save the day! Now with another option so that you no longer need to be envious. The new Airman jacket is similar in many ways to the current Airway jacket using Cordura AFT and Gore-Tex to protect you from the elements, yet still providing airflow similar to what you would find on a mesh jacket.

If you have not heard about Cordura AFT yet here is the low down - It’s some kind of ancient magic found in Finland that allows air to flow through things and keep you comfortable (WOW!). In reality this is not far from the truth. It is a special weave of Cordura material that allows airflow while still providing excellent abrasion resistance. Basically the stuff of everyone's dreams. Combine this with a removable Gore-Tex liner and you have a hard hitting combination to deal a knockout blow to mother nature.

Since the Rukka Airman Jacket is a new addition to the line that is very similar to the Airway jacket lets look at the things that separate them: Some main differences between the Airman and Airway jacket include 5 outer pockets (Still only one with a detachable waterproof pouch), Outlast thermal material in the liner, a rabbit pouch on the back, and D3O armor in the elbow and shoulders (an upgrade option on the Airway). Additionally, the Airman is a ¾ length jacket with waist adjusters for a more touring inspired fit.

So what do all these things mean? Probably the two most important features are the introduction of Outlast material in the liner and the D3O armor being standard (though the back protector is not included). The inclusion of Outlast in the liner is awesome, having ridden with Outlast in the cold I can say it is truly amazing. It is capable of regulating your body temperature at a comfortable level without making you overly hot or cold (to a certain extent).

Rukka Airman Jacket Review:

Rukka builds gear of envy for the hard core rider that lives on two wheels and the addition of the Airman to the line expands the options available to riders looking for something with few compromises. So check out the new Rukka Airman if you are in need of a warm weather jacket to do battle with mother nature.

Rukka Armaxion: For Any Road

I am not sure what the weather is like in your neck of the woods right now but here in Philadelphia we just experienced a week of record low temperatures. 2014 has brought with it snow, ice, and sub-zero temperatures. In these temperatures even the projects in the garage go unattended in favor of strong coffee and a good book. On this frigid, Saturday morning, I went for my well-worn copy of “Jupiter’s Travels” by Ted Simon. I have already read it more times than I can recall.

In case you are not familiar, “Jupiter’s Travels” is an account of one mans four year journey around the world. In the beginning of the book there is a picture of all the gear he took with him and it is a vivid reminder that of where “Adventure Touring” got its start. His jacket was nothing more than a leftover from the British Royal Air Force. I recently saw a clip of Ted Simon trekking across a rocky desert and he was outfitted head to toe in modern riding gear.

There is no touring gear available for purchase that is more advanced in its technology and design than what is being released by Rukka. Taking an uncompromising approach, Rukka uses only the best components to create jackets, pants, and gloves that offer riders the highest quality finished product possible. For 2014 Rukka has set out to introduce new models into their American lineup in an effort to provide the US consumer more flexibility and options within the brand.

One of the first jacket and pant combinations that we will be seeing in the new year will be the Armaxion. Meant to offer riders a less technical and more affordable version of the Armas, the Armaxion is a fantastic jacket and pant combo in it’s own right.

Sharing the same composition as the Armas, the Rukka Armaxion Jacket features a Armacor shell with Gore-Tex Pro 3-layer protection built in. Armacor is an abrasion resistant fabric that is a combination of Kevlar fibre with Cordura reinforcement. The Armaxion’s removable liner is not made from Outlast material like it’s bigger brother but rather it is a Thermoreflective 60 gram insulated lining. The idea is that it reflects heat back toward the body keeping you warm when you need it most.

Airflow is provided via two large vents located on either side of the jacket to keep the rider cool when temperatures warm up. The main zipper, as well as the zippers at the cuffs, are waterproof, making the Armaxion one of the most sophisticated jackets on the market for battling the elements. Even the detachable collar is Gore-Tex. Whereas the Aramas is going to be a Four Season jacket with all of its advanced venting, the Aramaxion is going to excel as a Fall, Winter, Spring Three-Season cold weather jacket.

It is designed to couple perfectly with the Rukka Armaxion Pants using a 270 degree zipper connection. The pants also include removable suspenders to assure they stay where they are supposed to in the event of a tumble.  They share the same Armacor shell and Thermoreflective removable liner as the jacket. Stretch panels at the thigh and knee allow for maximum movement and comfort.

The pants have Rukka’s AirCushion system, which creates a climate buffer between the rider and the seat. In turn it helps to regulate temperature and reduce condensation that can build up after long hours in the saddle. The Armaxion pants keep the rider planted in the saddle using the Keprotec Antiglide system to ensure grip. Airflow is provided via ventilation openings at the thighs.

For 2014, Rukka is using D3O armor which is a switch away from their RVP Air armor found in their earlier garments. D3O is top of the line impact protection and is a huge step up from the RVP of previous models. The Armaxion Jacket will feature D3O Air armor at the shoulders and elbows and will come standard with a D3O Central Back protector. The D3O can also be found in the Armaxion pants offer riders impact protection at the knees as well as the hips. Between the Armacor shell and the D3O armor this is one of the safest pant and jacket combinations on the market.

If you have never read “Jupiter’s Travels” I would recommend it as a must read for amateur and advanced touring riders alike. Whether you are heading out for your first long weekend road trip with your buddies or taking a solo expedition to explore Coastal Peru after a grueling ride through Central America, Ted Simon departs hard earned wisdom in this enchanting tale of adventure.

We live in an exciting era that makes it extremely easy to outfit yourself for adventure. Bikes and the technology surrounding them have come quite far since 1973 when Mr. Simon left England in search of his story. Gear like the Rukka Armaxion allows riders to venture longer and further into unexplored terrain. The possibilities for your next ride are nearly limitless, which leads me to ask, “What is your story going to be?”

Rukka AiRider: Staying Cool is a Breeze

So long Polar Vortex. I think that I speak for all of us in saying you won’t be missed. Okay, so maybe it’s a little early to pull out the swim trunks and grilling tongs just yet, but we are definitely 24 hours closer than we were yesterday! Spring and summer are on the horizon, great adventures and moto memories await!

When it comes to moto-specific garments geared for maximum protection, functionality, and comfort, the Rukka line rides sidecar to none. With apex materials and technologies such as Gore-Tex Pro with Armacor, SuperFabric, Outlast, and more, there is not a paved (or un-paved) road on the planet that they have not thought to prepare for. From the rigorous evaluation of every kind of material employed in their manufacturing, to the legion of professional testers who put the prototypes through their paces in the field, no expense is spared in delivering the end consumer with some of the most robust moto garments in the world. As daydreams of warmer weather begin to abound in the minds of motorcyclists in the Northern hemisphere, Rukka is ready to introduce the coolest moto jacket in their line-up… ever.

The Rukka AiRider Jacket is the newest addition the Air Power + series. With the shell of the jacket constructed out of a knitted blend of Cordura AFT fabric, it will enhance rider comfort in hot weather by flowing 1.8 times more air than regular Cordura. However, great airflow does not have to necessitate a regression in protection as each offers comparable levels of resistance against contact with the tarmac. Because of the fabric’s unique properties and capabilities, it is utilized on all of Rukka’s AirPower Technology Collection.

The largest difference between the AiRider and similar products such as the Airwave, AirMan, and AirComet, is that the former will forgo the Gore-Tex liner that can be found on the three latter models. In choosing this option Rukka has decided to make the jacket lighter, simpler, and in the end, more focused on keeping riders cool in hot weather. As with all Rukka moto gear, the AiRider will come with D3O Air Protectors at the shoulders and elbows as well as a pocket for an additional back protector to be purchased separately.

Rukka AiRider Jacket Review:

As the new year progress it will soon be time to re-pack the heated gear and beefy winter wear in exchange for something a little more in-tune with the warmer riding season. With a long lineage of highly specialized, thoroughly researched, and meticulously crafted moto gear to their name, Rukka looks to prepare you for every climatic circumstance. So fret not over those icy winter windshields and biting below-zero breezes, for spring and summer are just around the corner, and when they arrive, greet them with an appreciative smile and the new Rukka AiRider Jacket.

Have fun out there, be safe, and as always…

Enjoy the ride,

Moving Up in the World - 2014 AGV Sport Reveal

January is upon us, and for many riders this means a hiatus in the riding season. I like to use this time to catch up on some necessary bike maintenance and make what ever modifications I dreamt up over the past riding season.

Motorcycle gear manufacturers use this time to announce their new lineups, and we are pleased to announce one of the the largest AGV Sport gear reveals to date. We were ready for the usual leather jacket and pants updates, but the big surprise is the amount of new textile riding gear that AGV Sport is putting forward for the 2014 season.

The headline act of this reveal is undoubtedly the AGV Sport Astra 1-Piece Leather Suit. The Astra is AGV Sport’s new top-of-the-line leather racing suit that uses a combination of 1.1 and 1.3 mm thick leather. The thicker leather is used in the impact areas, with perforated leather used on the front of the thighs and armpits for better airflow. The Astra has a removable and washable antibacterial inner mesh liner, and uses accordion leather stretch panels around the shoulders, elbows, and knees.

In terms of protection the Astra uses CE Level-1 rated armor in the elbows, shoulders, and knees, and the back protector pocket will accept a Size 001 Forcefield Back Insert. The high impact areas are reinforced with Kevlar-backed seams and quadruple stitching. The external shoulder protectors are Carbon Fiber, while the elbow and knee protects are Titanium, and YKK zippers are used throughout for a secure seal.

The AGV Sport Astra will be offered in 4 different colorways, so you should have no trouble matching this suit to your bike. One of the colorways is a Red/White/Green combo that can either be seen as an Italian tribute, or a nautical theme with appropriate port and starboard markings.

Riding hot on the heels of the Astra suit is the AGV Sport GP Corsa Jacket, a new premium leather jacket borrowing features from the Astra race suit. The GP Corsa uses 1.1 to 1.3mm thick leather and has the same multiple stitching on impact areas, but it loses the Kevlar reinforced seams. The leather is micro perforated on the chest, back, and arms for ventilation, and uses accordion stretch panels around the elbows only.

There are Cordura panels running down the sides of the jacket for flexibility, and a neoprene collar for comfort. The antibacterial liner remains, but it is not removable, and it is now joined by a removable thermal liner. The elbow and shoulder armor is still CE Level-1 Rated, the shoulder protectors are Carbon Fiber pieces, and the back protector pocket with accept the same Forcefield Back Insert as the Astra suit.

AGV Sport is making a big push to expand its market presence with this 2014 product launch. With a ton of new textile gear to go along with the usual new leather products, AGV Sport has something for every rider.

Got Your Six: Forcefield Back Protector Pro Kevlar L2 EVO

Everything about a motorcycle is geared to attack from the front. As riders, that is often where the majority of our focus resides as well.  However, with a ten year lineage of top flight performance ingrained into every facet of construction, the Forcefield Back Protector Pro Kevlar L2 EVO is standing guard in the other direction.

Building on the already stellar pedigree of the original Kevlar L2, the new Kevlar L2 EVO takes the Forcefield promise of flexible, breathable, and all around comfortable soft armor to the next level. With the interconnected links of PVC Nitrile materials making up the triangle pattern of construction, the width of the walls taper from the base to the top. This structure is incredibly solid and will serve to provide a robust frame from which to begin.

Additionally, the chemical compounds of the NITREX EVO materials offer a multi-density protection aimed at prolonging the point of complete compaction. When armor reaches this point the greatest amount of energy will be transferred to the body. With the NITREX EVO materials, however, the foam is built to absorb the maximum amount of joules through regulated compression, thus reducing the overall level of kilonewtons to reach the rider in the event of an impact.

The new Forcefield Back Protector Pro Kevlar L2 EVO takes all of this technology and upgrades the overall performance with the tensile strength of Kevlar thread. By utilizing the high cut and abrasion resistance of the Kevlar material, they have boosted the cumulative protective qualities of the armor. When combined with the Repeat Performance Technology characteristics of the NITREX EVO material, this allows for minimal degradation to the functional aspects of the L2 EVO over time.

Looking at the transition from the original L2 to the EVO, the main differences can be seen/felt in the coverage and comfort. The first and most notable advancement can be seen in the extension of the L2K armor further down the tailbone. The advantages of this are simple... more coverage for more protection. However, while adding armor may guard against the dangers of the road, if it is not comfortable, it will nullify its own qualities and become a hindrance to the rider. Ever aware of this facet of design, Forcefield paid special attention the tailbone extension and constructed it so as to allow for proper mobility.

The second noticeable improvement will be felt in the overall ergonomics. As it is constructed out of multiple layers which are stitched together rather than one solid frame, the familiar tug/pull factor is reduced due to the ability of the layers to move across each other. At the same time, this also improves airflow between the back protector and the rider for better ventilation. Forcefeild has utilized this technology on previous iterations, however, the L2 EVO has paid special attention
to improving the functionality of each.

Much the same as its predecessor, both the L2 EVO Men's and Forcefield Women's Back Protector Pro Kevlar L2 Evo will be available. While the protective qualities and materials will remain the same between the two, they will also be designed with the ergonomic differences in mind. Features such as a higher-set waistband, strap placement, and sizing ratios on the Women's version will be aspects that most delineate the two.

Motorcycles do not have reverse. They move forward fast, hard, and with a voracious appetite to consume the tarmac lain before them. While you appease the ravenous cc's by keeping your attention on the road ahead, don't forget to gear up, strap up, and let the Forcefield Pro L2 EVO protect your six.

Have fun out there, be safe, and as always...

Enjoy the ride,

New Joe Rocket R1000X Helmets - SNELL Under $200!

BOOM. KAPOW. BLAM-O.

Need to make a statement with your lid? Want to stand out and make people jealous without looking like someone cracked a glow stick on you? Joe Rocket has you covered with their brand new R1000X helmet.

The competition for an entry level kick ass SNELL approved helmet gets better and better each year. Coming in right above the $150 mark, the R1000X is out for blood, with its sights set on Scorpion’s EXO-R410 and HJC’s FG-17.

Comprised of an aerodynamic Polycarbonate Composite shell, the R1000X is proving to be an incredible bang for the buck without compromising safety. Joe Rocket knew temperature control was a primary concern, so they designed two robust forehead intake vents which channel cool air fresh air directly to the EPS. The clever aerodynamics also work to benefit the ventilation. By creating a vast negative pressure behind the helmet, Anthony’s favorite “venturi effect” pulls warm moist air through the exhaust vents integrated within the spoiler.

It goes without saying that you will be a one of a kind with these vibrant color schemes. No need to get a race replica helmet with crazy graphics - the Joe Rocket R1000X Lithium Helmet offers Black/White/Red, Silver/Blue, Red/Yellow, Black/Green (for those of you on a Kawi), and Black/Purple colorways.

Similarly, the Joe Rocket R1000X Blaster Helmet comes in a popping Red/Yellow and Blue/Orange/Yellow, with a toned down Silver and Black colorway if desired. This graphic has a modern cartoon style to it - a trend that has been developing and catching fire lately.

Whether you are looking for a budget friendly helmet, a spare, or a backup for a passenger, the R1000X is going to definitely be worth taking a look at. The market for SNELL rated helmets under $200 continues to grow and Joe Rocket is making sure to get a piece of the pie!

Protection: It's Not just For the First Date

We do not wear armor when we ride a motorcycle because we plan on crashing. If that were the case I would wear a t-shirt and jeans with a pair of Chucks and just never plan on crashing. Instead, we wear armor to protect us in the event of a crash and work every day on improving our riding abilities to help avoid accidents. However, as the old adage goes, “Accidents happen”.

My faithful Triumph Bonneville still bears the scars of my first tumble on two wheels.

After college I had moved out to Los Angeles in search of a teaching position. I had taken a job as a Director of Education running a Sylvan Learning Center mainly because it featured a four day work week. This left me with three day weekends with which to explore the far reaches of the Californian deserts and mountain ranges with my Bonnie. It was during one of these weekend adventures that I had taken a lady friend on a ride up into Topanga Canyon located in the mountains north of Malibu and outside the bustle of the city.

I planned the ride for sunset and took her up Los Flores Canyon Road to this little overlook where you can watch the sunset over the beaches of Malibu below. Upon reaching the vista at the top of the mountain I was feeling pretty good about how the evening was progressing. As I pulled my Bonnie to the side of the road she tried to dismount the bike before I had come to a complete stop. Her foot caught on the seat and as she fell over she took me and the bike with her. I ended up with my right leg pinned under the bike as I watched her sail right over the guardrail and tumble about 30 feet down the side of the mountain into the canyon below.

Gentleman, in case you have any doubt in your mind, let me promise you this: It does not work in your favor when trying to impress an attractive young lady to push her down the side of a mountain. If you disagree with this statement you are doing something wrong, write me, we can talk about it.

In the end we were both wearing the proper safety gear and other than a few scrapes on the Bonnie and a few bruises to the ol’ ego, we both ended up being “OK”. It is better to be wearing the proper safety gear and not need it than to need it and not have it. This was the thinking that led to the new NeT Replacement Armor from Forcefield.  With this new line of armor, Forcefield makes it more comfortable than ever to make sure you are protected in the event of a crash.

Already a leader in the industry, Forcefield Armor is introducing a whole new line of armor for the Spring of 2014. NeT Upgrade Armor will be a premium option for riders looking to replace their existing armor. The new protection will have a maximum thickness of 9mm as well as the utmost flexibility with the rider’s comfort, as well as safety, taken into account. Mind you, safety is not sacrificed to achieve comfort, as the new NeT Armor maintains the same RPT (Repeat Performance Technology) we have come to expect from our premium motorcycle protection.

Forcefield will be introducing NeT armor in both a Standard, “Pre-moulded” version, as well as a Flat, “universal” version. It will be available as both Forcefield Net Shoulder armor and Forcefield Net Elbow/Knee armor. You will also be seeing Forcefield Roots Insoles using similar technology for extra support and impact protection for the soles of your feet.

Both versions will offer the utmost breathability, perfect for both the deserts of Africa or the Urban Jungle which is Los Angeles. Forcefield recommends removing your existing armor and measuring it to determine if the Standard armor will work in your favorite jacket or pants. If you determine that the Standard will not fit, then the new Forcefield Net Flat Shoulder or Forcefield Net Flat Elbow/Knee armor will be the way to go. It is cut in a way which will allow riders to manipulate the shape in order to make it fit almost any application.

Although CE 2 certification has not yet been standardized for Shoulder, Elbow, and Knee protection, the new NeT armor is designated as “PREN1621-1 Level 2”. This means it is pre-approved to meet the new Level 2 standards when they are released. With that being said it only meets these new standards in Ambient, Cold, or Wet conditions. During high temperature testing it reverts to Level 1 standards due to the composition of the material.

Last week I was having a conversation with fellow RevZillian, Eric, about the merit of chest protectors. We are both relatively spirited riders, Eric probably more so than myself, and I was commenting about how, even at track days, I have never used chest protection. Eric argued that he was a fan of any product which offers additional protection to a rider in the event of a crash. He followed it up by saying he recommends using the maximum amount of armor that an individual feels comfortable with. This is one of the most solid points on the subject I have heard to date. For example, there is no point in dropping $200 on a stand alone back protector, instead of a jacket insert or other replacement armor, just to leave it sitting in your closet when you go out for a ride because it is uncomfortable or inconvenient to wear.

This is what Forcefield is setting out to prevent with its new NeT Replacement Armor. They want you to be comfortable wearing your protective motorcycle gear in all riding scenarios because armor can only protect you while you are actually wearing it.

Accidents happen, and they happen when you least expect them. One minute you think you are being suave, carving up a canyon road at sunset to impress a girl, and the next minute you are climbing down the side of a mountain to help a girl out of the mud. I learned a lot from this experience, nothing more than the importance of making sure you and your passenger are wearing the proper safety gear during all rides. I also learned not to expect the rest of a date to go smoothly when you start it off by throwing the girl down the side of a mountain.

Perhaps that is the most important lesson.
