Gerbing Heated Liners: Feeling Hot Hot Hot!

Me mind on fire -- Me soul on fire -- Feeling hot hot hot...

If you didn’t know that Gerbing (that’s right, Gerbing, the “s” is now silent; and also invisible) heated clothing has been in short supply for a little over a year, then you’ve either been living under a rock or in a climate akin to tropical beaches, sunshine, and drinks with umbrellas in them.

Now dubbed the “CoreHeat12” line, new Gerbing Heated Jacket, pant, and vest liners are expected to ship from Gerbing’s new North Carolina manufacturing facility in the next few weeks. You may be familiar with their original Core Heat line that utilized 7-volt rechargeable batteries for non-motorcycle use. The name is now making its way into the motorcycle side because, well, the idea is that the Gerbing Heated Vest, jacket, and pants Heat your Core and run off your bike’s 12-volt electrical system -- hence "CoreHeat12."

Gerbing Coreheat12 Heated Jacket Review

The Gerbing Heated Pant, jacket, and vest liners utilize a microwire grid to provide heat. This system, implemented in the previous generation of liners, is a grid of thin Stainless Steel wire that is very durable when compared to copper wire and heats up very quickly - 0-135 in about 4 seconds. Can your bike do that? :)

You’ll find that not much has changed in terms of fit and function but that they have made some improvements. One improvement of note is now each heat panel has a thermostat that constantly monitors and regulates heat to ensure a consistent level of heat throughout the garment, better control, and more reliability. Aside from this clever update, the overall look an feel has been refreshed, giving it a more 'current' aesthetic.

Look for more offerings from Gerbing in the coming months to keep you warm to the core.

Gerbing EX: Extreme, Exceptional, Extraordinary!

Have you ever broke up with a girlfriend, only to bump into her years later, and she looks much better than she did before?  You may still have that beer gut, but Gerbing certainly doesn’t.  Oh yeah, that's right, our heated gear experts had a makeover in the past year, and it certainly shows.  Their hip new name is the first thing you'll notice, but there's a lot of other exciting things that went on behind the scenes as well.  It's like they went to summer camp a girl, and came back a woman.

One of the most exciting changes to their range, and the one this article will be focusing on, is a new line of outer gear.  That is, rather than just a heated liner, Gerbing has a new stand-alone jacket, pant, and pair of gloves.  Complete with waterproofing, armor, and heated elements - for those who don’t wish to fiddle with layer upon layer - Gerbing has the answer.  Enter the “EX” line.  Does it stand for External?  Extreme?  Exceptional?  Extraordinary?  I don’t really know.  What I do know is that you can get a whole new set of gear that looks good, has a good build quality, and will keep you warm and toasty all year long.  Taking some style cues from the likes of REV’IT, Gerbing has a new line of gear that even I, Dainese’s #1 Fan, wouldn’t be ashamed to wear.

Starting with an abrasion resistant Cordura shell, the Gerbing EX Jacket offers a full host of protective features.  If CE rated shoulder and elbow armor wasn’t enough, Gerbing saw fit to include a back protector as well!  Woo!  And if crashing isn’t on your list of fun-things-to-do, the jacket also has plenty of reflectivity on the front and back.  As it stands, no high-viz option is available, so the reflectivity is a welcomed addition.  Stretchy cuffs will make the jacket a bit more comfortable, as will the full ventilation system - which will give the jacket a bit of seasonality.  Between the ventilation and removable liner, the EX line should be comfortable in Fall, Winter, and Spring.  Anything warmer than that and you’ll be sweating bullets.

If your stems get cold too, you can pick up the Gerbing EX Pants as well.  They’ll come with the same Cordura shell, have the same CE rated protectors in the knees (and maybe the hips, they haven’t told us yet), the same removable Thermovelocity Protection lining, and a similar venting scheme.  It’ll also come with plenty of pockets to keep all your goodies in.

The third and final member of the EX family are the Gerbing EX Gloves.  Again with the sharp style, Gerbing offers a product that isn’t quite groundbreaking, but certainly a step in the right direction.  Gerbing has been making gloves for quite some time, and it shows.  The EX Gloves come complete with waterproofing, heated elements, and easily adjustable velcro cinching and adjustment straps.  Luckily for everyone, the EX Gloves also have some pretty beefy protection in the form of “wear resistant palms with full bone impact padding specifically designed for the temperature of speed.”  Last time I checked, speed doesn’t really have a set temperature - but I’m not going to argue with the cheesy humor of Gerbing’s copywriting team.  All in all, the EX Glove is very good-looking, decently protected, super warm option that will, at least for me, be the end-all be-all cold weather glove.

Okay, okay - enough with the marketing jive.  Gerbing changes their name, logo, and style - so what?  Nothing has changed.  Heated gear is heated gear.  Right?  Wrong!  The most interesting part of the new EX line, save for sexy style, is something called “coreheat12.”  Taking a cue from their outdoorsy line of gear, not only can the EX Jacket, Pants, and Gloves all be powered by your bike’s battery, they can also be powered by a portable 12v battery.  With a max temperature of 135°F, the EX line will keep you warm and toasty without the wires.

Or, if you really like wires, you can use them too - it’s up to you!  With the Core Heat Flex Pack Kit, you can have a 12v battery that shapes itself to the curve of your back.  No more bulky batteries strapped to your wrist or digging a hole into your leg!  So we’ve got a trendy new name, a style that holds its own against the Europeans, standalone protective gear, and a (nearly) wireless power source - what more can you ask for?  Well, for one - an availability date before January 2014.

Yes, the only downside to this great news is that Gerbing won’t be churning this stuff out until the middle of winter.  So you’ll be freezing in your skivvies until January.  Good thing humans are warm-blooded!

Gerbing Core Heat: Layer your Warmth

Heated gear is great on the bike, but when you are out and about, opportunities present themselves to walk around and explore. Until now, there really haven’t been that many options to suit this criteria, but thankfully, Gerbing (notice it is not called Gerbing’s anymore) has launched their Core Heat line to keep you nice and toasty when not plugged into the bike.

Another common gripe about heated gear is that it generally looks, well, how do I put this… terrible when worn alone. That is not the case with the Core Heat line. Actually, the true intention of the Core Heat gear is to be worn every day in the cold, not while riding a bike. Utilizing a 7V, 2.2Ah Lithium Ion battery, the maximum temperature that the heated panels can achieve is 135 degrees (fahrenheit) at 7.7 watts.

Gerbing has addressed these needs from a multitude of angles. The simplest (and most affordable) items in the Core Heat repertoire are the Fleece and Softshell vests. The Gerbing Core Heat Softshell Vest offers a bit of water resistance and wind protection, while the Gerbing Core Heat Fleece Vest is, well, a heated fleece vest!

If you’re looking for a true heated jacket in the colder weather no need to worry - there are three full sleeve jackets in the Core Heat line to keep you toasty. The Gerbing Core Heat Fleece Jacket is the most simple - designed to be worn under a heavier layer or during the late fall or early spring. Basically, this is the full sleeved version of the Fleece vest (with additional heating elements, too).

For the coldest of winter, two beefy options have been introduced with integrated heating elements. The Gerbing Core Heat Puffer Jacket is just that - a PUFFY heated jacket! This water resistant jacket is an optimal choice while shoveling snow or walking the dog in the bitter cold, but might not be enough if you are subjecting yourself to extreme conditions.

For those extreme conditions, the top of the food chain Gerbing Core Heat Ski Jacket is going to be suitable. Guys and gals, this is the real deal - Gerbing has combined their heating elements with a windproof, waterproof, seam sealed jacket with all the necessities for hitting the slopes. A powder skirt and goggle shammy are included, indicative of this jacket’s intended purposes.

Gerbing suggests always wearing a base layer between your skin and the heating elements. Without a consistent layer of material, the heating will feel unbalanced; causing some parts of the jacket to feel warmer than others (and can actually get dangerously hot!).  This specifically developed Gerbing Core Heat Base Layer is designed to work in conjunction with their heated gear for those in search of optimal performance.

I am not going to lie, this new stuff is pretty exciting. I am cold blooded and am always freezing in the winter, no matter what I am wearing. If you are anything like me, the Core Heat line provides a solution to us thin-blooded people!

Gerbing Puffer Jackets: Inflate Your Body Temperature!

Finally, winter options that aren’t entirely pink in color yet sleek, form fitting and stylish. Gerbing really hit a home run with these new winter heated jacket or vest options for women riders.

For the short commutes to work or around town the Gerbing Core Heat Puffer Vest will be your lifesaver. Keeping your core nice and toasty under any textile or leather jacket. This option would also be great for anyone riding pillion on a larger touring bike, such as a Goldwing.

I know there are a few of you out there wondering; “won’t my arms get cold?”. If you have to ask that question, then you most likely should just purchase the Gerbing Core Heat Puffer Jacket. It’s designed for those that have more of a sensitivity to the elements, as well as for those that have longer commutes.

Keep in mind that both options can totally be used when attending outdoor events such as; Friday Night Lights, or an MLB game. So, whether you’re a motorcyclist or not, Gerbing kept their solution flexible when designing these new winter gear options.

Dainese Carve Master Gore Tex Jacket

Adventure touring jackets are usually built for function. They are 3/4 length jackets designed to hold up against inclement weather, not show up on the cover of a fashion magazine. They are not much to look at, but they'll keep you warm and dry in a downpour. They'll provide decent air flow on warm days, but you'll never be cool and hip.

The Dainese Carve Master Gore-Tex Jacket is not your run of the mill adventure touring jacket.

Dainese molded shoulder protection is pebbled to look like leather. The look is much more refined compared to the metal shiny shoulder armor from Dainese's racier options. Gore-Tex is built right into the outer shell, so you won't have to worry about a waterproof liner. The Carve Master includes a removable thermal liner, but you won't need it. The jacket is so stylish that you will look smoking hot.

Dainese Carve Master Gore-Tex Jacket Review:

Guys who rock the Dainese Carve Master are master's of their own universe. They are connoisseurs of the finer things in life, like riding a motorcycle through mud puddles, rain drops on faceshields, and seeing your breathe before cold morning rides. They are one odd breed of motorcyclist. They take their expensive italian shoes hiking. They don't worry about getting their Armani suit a little dirty while performing regular chain maintenance.

This jacket will look at home lane-splitting through traffic on a Monday morning, tearing up canyon roads, and even a quick jaunt on your local fire road. It would look just fine going down the runway during fashion week or filling up at the gas station.

A Gerbing Guide to Preventing Metacarpal Malfeasance: keep your hands warm!

I bought my first motorcycle in the middle of winter, determined to ride it home. My gear was layered, thermal liners were in place, and I rocked two gloves on each hand. All good sense was drowned out by 1200cc’s of that two-wheel freedom mobile as the engine beckoned and I rolled on the throttle. By the time I hit 4th gear I had become well acquainted with the piercing effects of windblast. Curse my youthful hubris!

Welcome to the new world of Gerbing. The company that has focused on heated gear since 1975 is set to release the new 2013 line and our first glimpse at their reinvented image comes in the five finger variety.

With an on-wrist LED controller and the ability to warm your paws up to 135 degrees F, the Gerbing Core Heat Gloves serve as the entry-level piece in the Gerbing line. With high levels of phalange flexibility the gloves offer sturdy construction without interfering with your ability to interface with the controls.

For the discerning rider looking for all the functionality of the Core Heat, yet with the subtly-soft welcoming-warmth of fleece, this glove is for you. And for those outdoor aficionados among us, or motorcyclists who really want to blend it, the Gerbing Core Heat Fleece Gloves come in camo as well.

If Santa Clause were to sit on your lap in the mall, this is the holiday gift he would ask for! Designed for the the coldest and harshest of conditions, the Gerbing Core Heat Mitts will be waterproof, durable, and well-equipped to handle the winter winds at speed . . . whether your sleigh is powered by petrol or 8 magical reindeer.

Bulking up like a red-shirt linebacker with a meal plan, the Gerbing Core Heat S3 Gloves take their game to the next level. Designed for the heartiest of hearts who see the winter elements as an opportunity to be seized rather than an obstacle to be avoided, the S3 offers robust accommodations within a waterproof Nylon shell for your fingers as you bound about in your winter playground.

The Gerbing Core Heat Next Gen Gloves are the pinnacle of technological advancement in heated gear. Leather palms, waterproof construction, and a rugged build to handle the most arduous of excursions. Stay warm, stay dry, stay comfortable, stay functional.

We have all heard the expression; “they got cold feet.” It is a term used when people back-out, cop-out, and most unfortunately, miss-out on what could possibly have been an experience of a lifetime. Do not be that person! By making use of stretch upper heat panels for increased comfort, and non-stretch lower panels for durability, the Gerbing Core Heat Sock Liner insulates and wicks away moisture to keep you warmer, drier, longer.

The fact of the matter is that for those of us residing north of the 30th Parallel, the meteorological realities of the changing seasons necessitate a re-evaluation of our warm-weather riding apparel. This year, when Old Man Winter reaches out to shake your hand, shake back with the Gerbing line of heated gloves (or kick him with your toasty socks!), then leave him pouting in the snow as you proceed to explore, experience, and expand your sense of adventure no matter what the temperature.

Until next time, have fun, be safe, and as always...

Enjoy the ride!

Gerbing Women’s Core Heat Softshell Jacket and Vest

Riding in the winter is not for the faint of heart. So, kudos to those who bear the frost because they love to ride! But, gearing up can sometimes take forever and turn into a hassle. So, Gerbing (yes, Gerbing, not Gerbings) has decided to make things a little easier on us ladies with their new Gerbing Women’s Core Heat Softshell Jacket and Vest.

Gerbing Coreheat7 Women's Heated Jacket Review:

Instead of trying to neatly connect wires and controllers to more wires, the Core Heat Softshell series allows you to cut out all of the middle men. All you will need to warm up is the itty bitty heat controller that conveniently connects to an existing wire in in your pocket. You won’t have to connect to the bike and the heat controller has a battery that is fully rechargeable. So, you can stay warm long after you’re done riding! Wondering how efficient this will actually be? How does 0 - 135 degrees in about 4 seconds sound?

Just keep in mind, this is meant to be a mid-layer. So, over a shirt and under a protective jacket. There is no armor and neither the Gerbing Women's Core Heat Softshell Vest or the Jacket is abrasion resistant. It just looks good and will keep you warm.

Winter is Coming: Gerbing Women's Heated Gloves

You can't hide from it. Winter is coming.

For some of us that means sitting by a fireplace with a nice mug of hot chocolate, watching the leaves change or the snow come down. For others it means squeezing feet into ski boots, getting bundled up in brightly colored snow gear, and tearing up a mountain on a set of freshly tuned skis. For others still, winter brings long nights, short days, and cold commutes on the bike. In each of these situations there is nothing worse than having cold, numb fingers and hands.

To address this problem, Gerbing has come out with the Women’s Core Heat S3 and Core Heat Fleece Gloves. The Core Heat S3 is a glove designed for women who enjoy active outdoor winter activities. These gloves are waterproof, dexterous, and durable, and will work to keep you warm when skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, or dog sled racing.

The Gerbing Women's Core Heat Fleece Gloves are designed to keep you warm and ready for any winter adventures Mother Nature can throw at you. From walking the dog and going hiking to shoveling the driveway or piloting a light aircraft through a snowstorm, these gloves will keep your hands nice and toasty. Winter adventures are the best adventures, so get exploring!

“But how do these gloves work when I’m skiing? I don’t carry a battery with me!” I can hear you asking. The Gerbing Women's Core Heat S3 Gloves (As well as the Fleece Gloves) use Gerbing’s new on-cuff battery and built-in heat controller. The battery is good for up to 8 hours of heat on the lowest setting, and has a maximum temperature of 135°F.

Cold fingers are the worst, and with Core Heat, Gerbing is making heated gear available for for more than just motorcyclists. Don’t let winter weather get in the way of your activities and adventures; Gerbing has got the heat, now go and show winter who’s boss!

New Icon Airmada Basstard Helmet: Something's Fishy.

Some call it inglorious. Others call it magnificent. Icon calls it the Basstard.

Oh my cod, It’s o-fish-al! Icon has produced one of the most a-lure-ing graphics of the year and it’s turtle-ly off the hook. We never thought we’d see a fish graphic but, admittedly, any-fin is possible. We think the Icon Airmada Basstard Helmet is reely well s-ketch-ed and it looks good from any angler. It’s androgynous enough for buoys and gills alike, and can still be worm on a bobber.

Don’t take too much time to mullet over; get it schooner rather than later before salmon else does! Seas the oppor-tuna-ty to get a unique helmet and you’ll never stop herring compliments from your friends! Even if you don’t need a new lid, just get it for the halibut (hell-of-it). Otherwise, you’ll be fit to be tide and saying “shoulda, woulda, ‘cuda.”

Icon Basstard Helmet Review:

Drop us a line, and tell us what you think of the Basstard! We dolphin-itely promise to scale back on the puns.

Joe Rocket: Spreading the Glove Love

In their new lineup, Joe Rocket has a little something for everyone. First up are the Joe Rocket Women's Rocket Nation Gloves. Bike and butterflies, do I hear Mariah in the background? These gloves are for the rider that wants you to know she’s feminine, but doesn’t want to sacrifice control over the bike. Each glove is finished with silicone printed graphics for a superior grip.

Next up are the Joe Rocket RX14 Crew Touch Gloves. These gloves are for all you out there who simply must be able to operate your smartphones with your gloves on. Instagrammers beware, just because these gloves are touchscreen friendly doesn’t mean that it’s safe to snap photos of that sunset while you’re riding! #latergrams please.

Finally, we have the Joe Rocket Vento Fingerless Gloves, appropriately named after the word for wind in Italian. The Ventos offer the airflow of mesh, the grip of leather, and the comfort of a gel palm. Leather fringe grips are not included.

The need for Speedmaster!: New Joe Rocket Leather

Are you done kicking the tires and ready to light the fires? Then you most definitely feel the need: the need, for Speedmaster!

Joe Rocket has hit the afterburners on their Speedmaster jacket. The name’s been around for JR for years but this newest iteration gets some features carried down from their predecessors and from the race suit of the same name but with a little more grown-up design (gone is the “sponsor badged” look of the SM 5.0 jacket).

The Joe Rocket Speedmaster Jacket has titanium shoulder sliders with molded-in vents and better-positioned expansion panels on the back and elbows. Also, there’s a thermal vest liner for those cooler days. So you get a little more comfort, flexibility, and protection for when you’re canyon carving.

Something else to look out for are some extra-visible “High Risk Red” and “Radioactive Yellow” colorways. An 8” connection zipper matches your Speedmaster 5.0 or Blaster 2.0 pants but, sadly, there’s no 360-zip so this may not be the most track-friendly jacket off the rack. You can always have the upper half that comes with the pants sewn on. See your local tailor for details.

Snag this jacket and you’ll be ready to don those aviator shades under your Speedmaster Carbon Helmet and rev up your GPZ. Permission to fly-by granted, Maverick!

Start a Revolution! Joe Rocket Ballistic Revolution Jacket

It’s Christmas time for motorcycle gear-heads. Tis the season for new releases. New for Fall 2013, Joe Rocket introduces the Ballistic Revolution Jacket. If you experience true winters with rain, sleet, snow, and cold temperatures, Joe Rocket wants you to unwrap the Ballistic Revolution Jacket. If you’re in sunny California and ride year round in perfect weather...no one is talking to you (please excuse my jealousy)!

Ballistic Revolution? Did Joe Rocket go off the deep end? Are they starting a Revolution?

I am not convinced. For those of us who are familiar with Joe Rocket gear, we know they favor comfort by making relaxed cut garments. So, when I tell you the new Joe Rocket Ballistic Revolution Jacket has a ton of adjustability for multiple body types….no surprises there.

In addition to comfort, Joe Rocket went above and beyond with protection. The first line of protection is the outer shell. If you enjoy riding with waterproof and abrasion resistant outer shells, you’ve hit the jackpot. It’s nice when you don’t have to take on 50 lbs of water before your waterproof liner kicks in. In the name of protection, I am pleased to announce the Ballistic Revolution incorporates a full sleeve removable thermal liner for those chilly days when you’re happily commuting in sub-freezing conditions. Damn you Californians! Last but not least, we cannot forget the staple features like CE rated armor and reflectivity.

The Ballistic Revolution jacket will have you prepped for 12 rounds of hard fought riding. Watchout mother nature!

Joe Rocket Super Street RX14 Boots and Atomic Boots

We can’t all be spacemen, but the new Joe Rocket boots can help fulfill your dreams of space exploration. Well, at least their unique design will make your feet seem out of this world.

The Joe Rocket Atomic Boots look like they belong on a real life rocket ship, worn by interplanetary explorers zooming across the cosmos. Made up of 95% leather and 5% synthetic material (that 5% synthetic material is probably moon dust, but don’t quote me). Spacemen don’t need laces or even zippers. The ratchet strap closure means quick on and off. The double stitching in stress areas will hold up to the stresses of use on a motorcycle and the desolate vacuum of space.

The Joe Rocket Super Street RX14 Boots favor motorcycling over interstellar travel. The articulated ankle design, low profile toe box, and peg-friendly no-slip sole are much more at home on two wheels than rocket boosters. Don’t worry about scraping your toe sliders while attacking corners. The magnesium toe sliders are replaceable. Do worry about aliens attacking because they will try to steal these fancy new boots.

These new Joe Rocket boots will offer style and protection at a price well below $200. You can use all the money you save to build a backyard rocket. Sure, you’ll have to save up for the rest of the space suit. But at least you have the shoes covered.

New Joe Rocket Gloves: Entry-level Knockouts!

What is better than a quality leather glove available for under $100? How about a quality leather glove for under $50? Joe Rocket continues to astonish us with their high quality, value oriented products and these three gloves are certainly not an exception.

The Joe Rocket Windchill Gloves, JR's entry level waterproof, windproof, full cowhide, insulated winter glove. This is the perfect glove for those looking to ride in the cold, keep a subtle look, and help keep their wallet heavy. While this glove does not have quite the levels of sliding protection as a more technical glove, it does have a gel insert in the palm to reduce vibration. The Windchill is the most spendy of the new lineup, but is still an incredible value for what it offers.

Next up, following in line with the Windchill, is the Joe Rocket Classic Gloves. The name for these is the perfect descriptor - they are elegant, simple, and effectively a timeless classic. When someone says to you: “leather glove,” the Joe Rocket Classic is what comes to mind.

Lastly, and perhaps the most exciting of the bunch, is the Joe Rocket Speedway Gloves. Coming in at under $50 Joe Rocket managed to make a full cowhide, sport oriented glove; complete with carbon fiber knuckle protectors and a riveted palm slider. For an entry level, protective, sport riding glove, the Speedway is tough to beat.

Again, Joe Rocket continues to knock our socks off with their quality gear and value based pricing. If you are new to riding, or just want to manage your costs while keeping safety as a top priority, Joe Rocket is the route to take.

Leatt STX RR Road Neck Brace: "Protect ya Neck!"

The Leatt STX RR Road Neck Brace, despite what the name suggests, is a track and road race specific product.  I see you wearing your Arai Corsair V on the street.  “But if it’s a race-level product, it must offer more protection, right?  Wrong!”  This RR version is a purpose built piece of fiberglass reinforced polyamide resin goodness, meant to be worn ONLY while racing and ONLY with a race suit.  Your neck is a complex piece of anatomy, treat it as such.  A lot of engineering has gone into neck brace technology, so sit down and feed your brain.

The Leatt STX RR uses ALPT (Alternative Load Path Technology).  This is how all neck braces work.  Unlike helmets and knee braces, neck braces are not meant to absorb all the shock of an impact, but rather disperse it over the rest of your body - which can collectively absorb much more energy than your spine.  The most common of neck injury happens when you flip over the handlebars and smack the back of your head on the pavement.  The neck bends forward until . . . SNAP.  No bueno!  The RR neck braces acts like any other Leatt does and stops your neck from moving too far forward (hyperflexion - the stuff that paralysis is made of).  It does the same for hyper extension (backwards), lateral hyperextension (side to side), hypertranslation (front to back) and compression (from the top).  The magic of the RR is that it has a profile low enough, and a design streamlined enough to offer all this protection in a format that is comfortable for the track.  It’s designed for the tuck position and nothing else.  If you’re riding upright, look elsewhere - this will not be as comfortable or as safe.

The STX RR is not currently being worn by any pros, but it is being tested by Aleix Espagaro - so it’s no joke.  Leatt’s lab in Capetown, South Africa is one of the most extensive and well stocked in the world (it turns out a lot of R&D goes into protecting your neck).  While the brace only comes in one size, there’s a lot of adjustability (neck size and height) - which you will need.  The STX RR is designed to fit outside of race leathers and works well with speed humps, so leave your Aerostich suit at home.  In the event of a crash, the brace will transfer as much energy as possible to your body, but is designed to break away if necessary.  This prevents injury to the collar bone and other places the brace comes into contact with on your body.  The brace should sit on your shoulder blades, not your speed hump.  You want it as close to your body as possible.  Remember, this is a purpose built race product.  Much like GP bikes, the STX RR has a very specific function, and if used outside of that - it will not work properly.

The initial responses I get from those who wear neck braces is almost always negative.  “I’ve worn one of those things before and it obstructed my range of motion.”  “I couldn’t hang off bike like Marquez with the brace on, so it was garbage and I threw it away.”  Whoa, whoa, relax for a second and think logically.  When you buy a new race helmet, do you just spot the prettiest one, pick a random size, and hop onto the track?  Nope!  You do research, you pick your lid, and you get some expert advice on finding the correct fit.  So why doesn’t the same method apply to neck braces?  “Because they’re new and scary, and I don’t like change.”  Well I hate to break it to you, but there are still people out there that think moto helmets do more harm than good.  Don’t listen to those people.  They’re wrong.  As long as the neck brace is sized and fitted properly (ask a friend to help with this), it works like a charm.  Your body positioning might have to be altered slightly - so be it.   Rather than acrobatics, try smoother, more deliberate motions.  I bet the first guy who had to wear a full-face helmet on the track complained that he couldn’t see as much.  Well guess what - he got over it because full-face helmets offer much more protection.  I predict that same thing will happen with neck braces.  In the immortal words of Wu-Tang Clan, “protect ya neck!”

TCX S-Speed, TCX R-S2, & TCX Speedway Boots: Don't Mind If I Do

Why is it, when things happen the way they’re supposed to, we give a slight sigh of relief? We've gotten used to being disappointed in certain products...and for good reason. The expression “things aren't made like they used to be” has never been so true. Many brands are so infatuated with the “almighty dollar” they cut any corner to get it.

TCX has been in the game for a long time...and rightfully so. They make great boots. I can personally attest to this. Continuing to progress their brand, they have introduced a few new sport boots for the Fall of 2013.

First up are the TCX S-Speed WP Boots. Without even looking at the tag, these were definitely made in Italy. They look sharp! We would classify these as aggressive street / entry level trackday boots. However, these are some of the most protective boots in their class. Now let’s talk quality. It’s high….VERY HIGH! The S Speed will compete with Sidi, Dainese, and Alpinestars any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Next up are the TCX R-S2 EVO Boots. Mamma Mia! After holding these in my hands and being reluctant to give them back, I am impressed. If you’re a serious track rider, look no farther. From a protection standpoint, they rock! The only thing these are missing is an ADT Security System. But, they don’t look like a boot that was manufactured on the “mothership”. The RS2 have a technical but classic style. Comfort? We’re talkin' about comfort!? These are definitely TCX’s franchise player and we ARE talkin' about comfort. If you slip your feet into these boots, get ready to experience the Precise Air Fit System. It’s just lovely.

Last but not least are the TCX Speedway Boots. TCX had a specific intent when creating these boots. They decided to show a little love to the flat track riders. I would not hesitate to classify these as dirt biased dual sport boots. These boots will provide excellent comfort, rigidity, and akley protection when going flat out on the dirt track or navigating your way through the fire trails on your way home from the office.

Whew! What to buy what to buy!? Thank you TCX for continuing to push the envelope. It’s nice when a product easily conveys the amount of pride a company takes in their work. They’ve got my attention.

TCX Custom GTX & X-Ride WP: These Boots Were Made for Ridin’

I am not going to lie, it is hard to get excited over a pair of commuter boots. Race boots or adventure boots, now those are easy to get pumped up about! They have armor, they have toe, heel, and ankle sliders, they have bracing and buckles. Race boots normally come in crazy color combos and let you pretend you to be a MotoGP rider. Adventure boots have all sorts of buckles, support, and motocross inspired design; lets be honest they just look badass.

Commuter boots though, are the bread and butter of the motorcycle boot world. You want commuter boots to be dependable, long-lasting, and weather proof. TCX has just released two new pairs of boots that buck this trend and are welcome additions to the TCX lineup: the TCX Custom GTX Boots and the TCX X-Ride WP Boots.

Feet getting soggy on the way to work? Have to wait out rainstorms cowering in gas stations or beneath highway overpasses because your boots lack waterproofing? The solution is here, and it takes the shape of the TCX X-Ride Waterproof Boots.

TCX has been making boots since 1999, and that is all that they focus on. Their experience comes from military and police footwear, and they were the first to introduce CE rated motorcycle boots. The TCX X-Ride Boots continue that passion for safety with heel, toe, and ankle armor that is CE-Certified. Getting into and out of the boots could not be easier thanks to the zipper and Velcro closure system. The TCX waterproof lining promises to keep you high and dry whether on road trips, or just on the morning commute.

The TCX Custom GTX Boots take the breathability and waterproofing of Gore-Tex and match them with the simple, restrained elegance of black leather boots. These simple black boots can easily be worn casually under a pair of jeans when going out to grab a bite to eat, but are equally at home with a black leather jacket on a murdered out chopper pretending to be Mad Max. Unlike Mad Max, you won’t have to put up with wet feet thanks to the Gore-Tex waterproofing. The Custom GTX Boots are CE-Certified to keep your feet safe when the highway gang closes in on you, or when you close in on the highway pavement.

With the Custom GTX and X-Ride WP Boots, TCX has created a couple of really great options for the rider who is looking for a waterproof boot that offers great protection as well as a clean, simple design. We’re really excited to get a pair on and cover some miles. What are you waiting for?

New Casual Riding Shoes from TCX

Out with the old, in with the new; TCX brings a new slew of riding sneaks Stateside. The X-Square shoes gained a lot of traction (heh) in the market and we warmly welcoming these addition: the X-Square EVO WP, Sport, Sport WP, and X-Roadster WP.

We loved the simple feel and good protection of the original X-Squares especially given their entry-level price point. If you’ve ever had them on your feet, however, you’d know there was not much that was “entry” about them.

The new TCX X-Square EVO WP Shoes still provide excellent bang for the buck with the same sleek low-profile design but with refined styling, greater ankle coverage, Fast Lace system for easily attainable custom fit, and a waterproof membrane. They’re fully capable riding shoes that are subtle enough to not scream “HEY!!! I ride a motorcycle! Look at my stormtrooper boots! Look at ‘em!” Despite your preconceived notions about us, sometimes we like subtle, and we certainly like these.

The TCX X-Square Sport Shoes and TCX X-Square Sport WP Shoes have all the same features of the EVOs but are offered in non-waterproof trim and add molded polyurethane toe sliders. The styling is a bit more aggressive and will most likely gravitate towards the sport riding crowd but are versatile enough for cruisers, V-twins, and tourers.

If you were bored and decided to inject your X-Squares with steroids, then you may come up with something like the TCX X-Roadster WP Shoes. These are very similar to the Sidi Blade and Alpinestars SMX-1/SMX-2 shoes but boast a waterproof membrane. The Roadsters have robust protection with heel and toe counters, ankle reinforcements, and replaceable toe sliders.

TCX’s Fall 2013 release includes a smorgasbord of riding shoes to suit just about anyone’s tastes. We hope you’re hungry!

TCX X-Rap: What you hear is not a test...

Safety and style are not mutually exclusive. TCX has built on the popular style of the X-Street shoes and made a taller more protective riding shoe with the TCX X-Rap. The fashionable and functional X-Rap shoes will complement the protection of kevlar jeans on the bike while still looking good off the bike.

Fashionista urban motorcyclists will dig the high top classic sneaker style with the full-grain leather construction. The reinforced ankle, tie, and heel combine to give this boot CE certification.

Whatever shade of kevlar jeans you rock, there will be an X-Rap color that will complete your casual motorcycle ensemble. The X Rap is available in Black, Anthracite/Grey, and Brown/Grey. Need a little bit more customization to your style? The Brown/Grey option includes an extra pair of fluorescent green laces to give your kicks that extra pop.  The TCX Women’s X-Rap version offers an Anthracite Grey/Fuschsia colorway.

TCX X-Rap Shoes Review:

Chuck Taylors were not made to go faster than you can sprint on your own two legs. Keep them off of two wheels (bicycles are ok, hipster). Wear the TCX X-Rap when you want protection without sacrificing style.

HJC IS-17 Helmet: Adding to the IS-16, one step at a time!

REV’IT! Opera Jacket & Urban Collection

Adding to the huge success of 2012’s line-up, REV’IT! is expanding their Urban Line with four brand new jackets tailored for the city rider who doesn’t want to sacrifice modern safety features for classic style and sophistication. Whether you’re riding a Vespa back and forth to the office, or ripping your cafe racer around town, you’ll be protected from both the elements as well as the asphalt - and look great doing it too!

The outer shell of the REV’IT Opera Jacket is a peacoat-styled overcoat best suited for Fall, Winter, and early Spring. Comprised of a brand new cotton-polywool material, it’s also backed by a 100% waterproof Hydratex liner to keep you dry. The REVIT Opera Jacket is equipped with a removable thermal liner for colder temps in addition to CE-rated Knox Lite armor in the shoulders and elbows. As it’s name implies, you’d be anything but underdressed should you wear this jacket to a formal night at the Opera.

REV’IT! Opera Jacket Review:

Perfect for the urban commuter who rides in all weather conditions, the REV'IT Concorde Jacket is equipped with a waxed memory-cotton outer shell, a detachable hood, a removable thermal liner and REV’IT!’s venerable Hydratex waterproof liner. With multiple adjustment straps and drawcords, the REVIT! Concorde jacket can be tailored on the fly for both style and function. A myriad of pockets provide room for all of your essentials and CE-approved Knox Lite armor will protect your shoulders and elbows from potential impact. Coming in both Navy Blue and Black, you’ll have a hard choice as to which color of this ultimate city jacket you’ll be wearing this season!

REV’IT! Concorde Jacket Review:

Rolling in on the coattails of last year’s best seller - the Melville Jacket, and all new for 2013 is the REV'IT Oxford Jacket. Just like its predecessor, the REV’IT! Oxford is a classic cut riding jacket worn by moto-riders since the style was introduced over 50 years ago. Unlike the vintage models you would see on Steve McQueen and Malcolm Smith, the Oxford Jacket is equipped with modern CE-rated Knox Lite shoulder and elbow armor. Similar to the Melville, the Oxford comes with a removable thermal liner. However, the biggest change between the two models is that the heavy cotton outer shell on the 2013 REVIT! Oxford no longer has a wax coating. It achieves its waterproofing through REV’IT!’s proprietary Hydratex G-liner system. If you’re a ton-up boy who wants to complete the look or just a rider looking for a modern twist on a tried-and-true motorcycle gear staple, the REV’IT! Oxford jacket is the way to go.

REV’IT! Oxford Jacket Review:

Always at the forefront of creating top-notch Women’s riding gear, REV’IT! hits the mark yet again with their Women’s Camden Jacket. With a feminine cut that is both sophisticated and contemporary with a double-breasted waist belt closure and using a polycotton oxford outer shell, the REV'IT Camden Jacket also boasts a Hydratex liner for 100% waterproofing. Not unlike the Men’s jackets from REV’IT!’s Urban Line, the Women’s Camden Jacket is also equipped with CE-Rated armor in the shoulders and elbows. A selectively placed reflection strip on the neck collar provides added safety when riding at night. Quite frankly, if Coco rode a motorcycle, the REVIT! Camden would undoubtedly be her favorite riding jacket, (I mean it only comes in Black, her favorite color...). For the fashion-forward female rider looking to compliment her gear closet, the REV’IT! Camden is an excellent choice.

The REV'IT Poseidon Jacket & Pants: Waves Of Comfort & Protection

So you always wanted a REV’IT! Everest Jacket for the Gore-Tex Proshell and its durability, waterproofness and breathability, but your name is not Sven and you are not Euro slim. Well, guess what, the REV’IT! Poseidon Jacket is your answer. REV’IT! are going to hedge their bets and offer two Gore Proshell jackets, one for off road and one for Commuters/Long Distance Tourers. The Poseidon GTX is aimed at the latter and you get all the benefits of Gore triple layer Proshell which is bonded to the the outer-most layer. This means no more water logged, sopping wet, heavy jacket. Proshell enables your jacket to shed the water off and will dry much faster than those with drop liners.

REV'IT Poseidon Jacket Review:

The other big improvement the REV'IT Poseidon GTX Jacket offers in addition to more American sizing (see videos on the Sand 2 for similar sizing) is the Aquadefence direct to body venting. On the REVIT Everest you had Gore’s Lock-Out vertical vents which offered direct to body venting, however as an Everest owner myself, getting the vents to stand open and allow air to flow through left something to be desired. The Aquadefence is a REV’IT! patent that started out on the Horizon Jacket and has been improved since iits introduction on this Jacket and Pant combo. For the Poseidon Jacket, it now uses magnetic fasteners to hold the vents open, yet allows you to close and seal the vent with one hand at the first sign of rain. On the jacket the vents are placed up high on the chest in the direct wind flow for most bikes. The REV'IT Poseidon Pants vents are located at the top of the knees. The surface area of the Aquadefence is far far greater than the previous generation using the Lockout zipper vents. These vents really work!

REV'IT Poseiden Pants Review:

Full length removable thermal liners, SAS-TEC armor in the knees, elbows and shoulders, a pocket for the SeeSoft Back Protector and grip panel on the seat of the pants to keep you from sliding, accepts Challenger Cooling Vest and Hi-Viz Connector Vest - this jacket has all the bells and whistles! The REV’IT! Poseidon could truly be that 4 season suit you've always been searching for!

REV'IT! Neptune Jacket & Pants

REV’IT! has gone and done it again! They have taken the entry level Gore-Tex Legacy Jacket / Pant combination and completely overhauled it into the REV'IT Neptune Jacket (I’m beginning to wonder it REV’IT! has been watching too many movies lately). In place of a floating Z liner that blocked any direct to body venting, they have changed it to a removable Paclite membrane. Now, when the heat cranks up you can remove both the thermal and the waterproof liners to allow direct to body venting (4 vents on the chest and back, 2 on the forearms and 2 on the upper thighs). The REV'IT Neptune Pants and Neptune Jacket are a true four season pant and jacket combination.

REV'IT Neptune Jacket Review:

In addition, REV’IT! went ahead added lot of little details to the Neptune GTX Jacket such as a rabbit pouch across the lower back to stash your liners plus adjusters on the waist, forearm and cuffs to customize the fit. REV’IT! added padding to the top of the shoulders for those who use hydration backpacks and prepared the jacket to accept the Hi-Viz Protector Vest and the Challenger Cooling Vest - of course this in addition to the Pro Life Armor in the elbows, shoulders and knees and pocket for the Seesoft Back protector. REV’IT! have taken a solid entry level Gore-Tex jacket/pant combination and made it stellar!

New REV'IT! Collar & Balaclava Bonanza

Masks and Collars and Balaclavas, oh my!

Did Juno that REV’IT just came out with some new accouterments for your face? Because they totally did. And if they didn't want me to make silly puns and references to Greek and Roman mythology in my blog posts, they shouldn't have named all of their new gear after gods, goddesses, titans, and other mythical creatures. The REV'IT Juno Collar is like an impenetrable shield wall, but for your neck. Cold? Get the Juno. Wet? Dry off first, and then get the Juno.  Though minimalist in its design (there’s not much to a collar), the Juno actually pulls off quite a long list of functionality. It’s comfortable. It insulates. It fights bacteria. It controls odor. Really, besides making denarii, I can’t expect much else out of a collar. Perfect for the rider who is on the road in both summer and winter, doesn't want a full mask, and wants to protect his (or her) neck from any harm in the Senate. Et tu, Brute?

Micro isn't a Greek god, but it is a word that means “small.” It also means “badass looking balaclava made by REV’IT.” You probably can’t find the latter definition in your dictionary though.  Not concerned about blocking the wind or keeping the water out? Still need to keep warm and manage perspiration? Dig the REVIT Micro Balaclava. Finally, a balaclava that’s comfy and doesn't create pressure points. Thanks for REV’IT’s “Round Knit” technology, those uncomfortable seams are (hopefully) a thing of the past. The Rev’It! Micro is a mini balaclava that only covers your face and neck. It’s insulating. It fights bacteria. It keeps odor at bay. It ventilates at the nose, mouth, and ears. It’s a surprisingly technical piece that is just at home on the bike as it is when you’re robbing the Empire’s treasury.

“But, John!” you exclaim,  “I want to protect my chest too - it gets very cold. Also, why are you so good looking?” That’s what you’re saying, right? Anyway, if your chest is particularly vulnerable to the elements, REV’IT has you covered (hah). Enter the REV'IT Maximus. Like the Micro, but with more coverage and a front panel made with Windstopper and a waterproof membrane.  The Maximus offers the protection of your favorite gladiator, but with the comfort of a soft animal - like a kitten, or a bunny. It’s stretchy. It’s comfy. It’s breathable. It also doesn't have any stitching around the eyes, which can create goofy red marks on your face.  And no one likes goofy red marks on their face.

REV’IT! Women’s Jeans - The Wait is Over

Meet Madison and Broadway. We have been waiting with baited breath for REV’IT! to offer up some Women’s jeans for a while now, and I’ll tell you why. Through their other gear, REV’IT! has shown that they know how to fit the female body and do so without compromising protection, comfort, or style.

Let’s start with the REV'IT Madison Jeans. The Madisons are a mid-rise, straight fit jean offered in a classic Blue Denim wash, slightly distressed around the knees. In typical REV’IT! style, the Madison jeans are constructed with a COOLMAX technology that enhances breathability and helps regulate moisture by wicking it away. These jeans are perfect for those of us who want to ride in jeans, but need a little extra function.

Then, we have the REV'IT Broadway Jeans. The Broadways offer the same fit, but are a darker wash and a slightly beefier pant for the rider who wants all of her bases covered. These pants are equipped with PWR panels at the seat and knees that meet CE Level 1 standards and the option to add SAS-TEC armor in the hips. Boom, need we say more?

Wait, there is more. Each pant is also complete with Knox CE protection in the knees that can be adjusted and tailored to your height. And, they’re constructed with Cordura Denim fabric to give you both abrasion resistance and that soft, worn in feel that we all love. Innovative, feminine and classic. Denim done right.
